As for wood types, it sounds like Swamp Ash alone, or with an 1/8" Maple cap is exactly what you're looking for. The notes will seem to jump right out of the guitar, and the highs will be crisp, clean, and open. The lows will be definitely present, but not wooly and thick like Mahogany can be in the extended register. Walnut is another good choice too. Man, trans colors on Swamp Ash look fantastic.

Pickup height can make a very substantial difference, but either a guitar is breathing for you or it's not. I've come up with just about every way to compensate for everything.

But there's no substitute for when the raw materials are right for the player.

See, I actually prefer basswood to mahogany. I know, burn the heretic.

My CST sounds incredibly detailed, but my UV is just so smooth, bassy, and warm.

Frank, swamp ash... Ash always sounded more conventionally "stratty" to me than alder, and would probably lend itself fabulously to a 7.

I have a swamp ash Zion six string that's one of the most resonant guitars I've owned. A swamp ash 7 might be interesting...

This is what I am thinking, I have an amazing 6string custom necthrough with the swamp ash wings and maple top, and that thing just sings, sounds amazing... And as the bass isn't too thick, but still defined and present I was wondering what it would sound like in a 7 as the bass end could quite possibly remain crisp with the whole thing singing

Swamp ash would work well. It really gives a good solid low B on my bass.
I really think you'd like maple too. It's real defined and solid. Gives you that 'smacked in the head with a bat' vibe.
