So maybe I'm weird...

I've owned an MIK 7321 for like 2 years now. It's got an Evo7, is tuned to Drop A using D'Addario 11-70's.

Two months ago I bought a used '99 K7. It was in pretty bad shape but the neck's all straight. Frets are worn, it's quite obvious the guy was a shredder or at least used the higher frets a lot.

I gave it a complete overhaul, polished the frets, put on my 11-70 strings, set the trem correctly, adjusted the action...

The action is pretty much the same as my 7321 now. I've played the K7 exclusively for a month or so.

But I think it doesn't play a bit better than the 7321. There, I said it.

I don't know what it is, but even though the trem is quite stiff ( / | \ configuration) the strings seem floppier, and I can basically play better on the 7321 than on the K7.

Sure, the neck profile is a bit different, but after one month of getting used to it, then switching back to 7321 and immediately feeling more comfortable, I'm starting to regret buying it.

I was eager to find out what "playability" meant on a high-level guitar but now I think that's a load of bull. And that MIK 7321 neck is damn fine.

Keep in mind, it's MIK, not MII though.

Now let the flaming begin!

IIRC, the K-7 is actually just a mahogany bodied RG that's made in Korea. The only reason it's so expensive is because it's a KoRn signature model. I haven't played one myself, but what you're saying seems to fit in with a lot of the other things I've heard about it. The strings probably just feel looser because of the trem.

No dude, back in the day the K7's were MIJ, it says so on the headstock too. Then they switched to MIK, but I don't know when. The Apex2 even is MII now.

Oh! Well that's different then. Maybe it didn't play as well because it had been used somewhat less than gently before you got it. I think the 7321 quality had shot up at some point, too, though I don't remember whether or not that was within the last two years. Every now and then, one of those MIK or MII guitars will be a really awesome fluke. The MIJ guitars are generally of consistently great quality, though.

I'm not sure what it is. I think I'm having some problems adjusting to the trem, so blocking that might be a good idea, but then there's still the fact that I like the neck of my 7321 better.

The K7 wins only in terms of sound.

That's why I'd say something like:

Personal taste in neck profile shape can make more difference than the price level, provided the frets are not fucked up.

All that talk about playability and "man, this universe plays sooo much better than everything else anyone has ever played" is, in my eyes, mostly voodoo.

"I payed a lot, so it's gotta be great..."

I'm not saying you're an idiot if you buy high-end guitars, but it's possible you might actually play better on something that was cheaper but that fits your style better.

Actually, in retrospect, that seems kinda like a no-brainer to me, but it took this experience to figure that out.

Do they have the same neck joint? You could get a graphite nut and slap the 7321 neck on the K-7 a la Chris Broderick. Then it just wins!

It is a mahoganybodied guitar with PAF's... What is it that is made for just one music with those options? Its a pretty diverse guitar IMO.
