I find fanned-frets to be much more comfortable than straight frets. Just spread your fingers apart on your fretting hand and look at the fan they make - and the frets imitate this.

The main purpose is for tone though - to allow the highest strings to be shorter and comfortable and not too twangy & harsh, and simultaneously allowing the bass strings to be longer with a much clearer tone and not too muddy & rumbly sounding.

It's the same reason that pianos & harps have longer bass strings and shorter treble strings.

Beautiful piece of workmanship. It looks like the neck/frets/headstock went through a time warp. I still question the playability of a fanned fret instrument, but since I've never touched one, I obviously can't say for sure. In any case, very nice craftmanship.
