If you are not a big trem user, then the JP7 trem is perfect. It doesn't do huge dive bombs or anything, but those are stupid anyway so no problem. It is great for a deep vibrato.
I like it because it still takes ball end strings (no cutting them off!) and since it is not double locking, you can actually do a string change right then and there on the spot without it being the huge ordeal that it is on a floyd-style trem. Even the ZR on my S7320 sucks for string changes compared to the pure awesomeness of the EBMM trem. It is also stable enough you can change to and from drop tunings without any huge issues.

Drop tunings? Wha?

Someone else here told me that it was full floating like my Soloist and I definitely can't drop tune on that thing. Can you or can you not do drop tunings (Drop D/whatever) on a JP without throwing the rest of the strings out of whack without a Tremel-no?

I've never played a EBMM JP7 but i've heard great things about them. I used to own a UV777BK however and I miss it dearly.

It is way more stable then the Floyd in your soloist. Still not so much that you could pop a string and keep on playing, but enough that you can go into drop D or drop A and only the high E goes a tiny bit out of whack. It is a GREAT trem.

Ha ha, you guys are killing me. Let me add some things.

I plan to own both of these guitars eventually, but this is my first foray into a really high end guitar. My fanciest one I've owned (not best playing) was my Alexi-600, so this is like a status/milestone thing as much as a pure guitar thing. It's like I'm finally figuring out my real taste in guitars and developing a more unique connection with music.

Dream Theater (basically Petrucci) has been a huge influence on me since I found them and I'm a prog nut. I can grasp switching between three different time signatures in four measures more than some much simpler things, but the reason I picked up guitar and got into rock music was because of Eddie Van Halen and the reason I practiced more and more technique was because of Vai.

So basically life story aside, even though my brain tells me "GET THE JP7 YA BLOODY DARBY" I can't help but feel I'm set on a UV inside and sort of planning to get the other down the road. I don't want to sound like I've already decided but... I flipped a coin and gravity told me to get the UV!

*Last minute addition*

I don't wanna come off like all nutty and stuff, I'm just terribly indecisive with big purchases like this. This is gonna be my last guitar purchase for quite a long time, so I'm heavily considering it. I'm going to be happy with either, so once my upcoming timesinks are gone, I'm sure the fund for the other guitar will open up. And I promise to make a picstory and a shredding video you've seen a million times already.

B-b-b-but if you get a UV you are just another one of the drooling Ibanez horde on this forum! not that theres anything wrong with that. I will say though, the greatest satisfaction I have ever gleaned from my JP7 is just showing pictures of it and saying I own it. Playing it is cool and all, but the tone is everything and I've had much much better sounding guitars that cost much less.

JP7 is definately superior to universe.

My personal big decision in a month or so will be whether to go for a used JP7 or a new J custom, I can't decide for the life of me now, but I don't have enough money anyway yet

I'll confess to never having played a JP7, and I'm sure it's great. But it just doesn't appeal to me looks-wise.

That's pretty inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, but the reason I fell in love with the guitar was because of Vai and Satch, and I've been an Ibby zombie ever since.

I love my UV... the unfinished neck is absolutely gorgeous and smooth as a baby's backside. Plus you can get them used if money is an issue (no idea what a JP7 costs these days, but I suspect there's not a very large used market).
