Bass string on 7th... have you tried it?
Hi all,
I was looking for Elixir strings for my seven... i need a 10-46 + 60 set Well, i just knew Elixir doesn't make .060 gauge for e-guitar... therefore i thought: "Why not to try a bass string, because they make 060's for basses" The down thing is that a .060 bass string costs 12,40€ !! ¿Have you tried bass strings? ¿Why are they so expensive? ¿may i expect different tonal quality (less sparkle power chords, etc.)? I play metal music so i don't want it sounds muddy or jazzy, i have no idea if a bass string on my 7th would sound right... just wanted Elixir all over my guitar and dont know any other solution. |

Nah. a string is a string is a string so it'll sound the same.
I use a D'Addario .065 bass string tuned to B because I can't get .068's in this retarded drunken country... ![]()

Better suggestion - stop using Elixir's. They are so overpriced for what they are its just unreal.

My buddy's got a 65 bass string on his Hellraiser right now. There was definitely a noticeable increase in low end when he put it on, which I believe is more than just the higher gauge affecting the tone. Either way, it still sounds good.

but what if you have a string-thru-body bridge, won´t the ball end hang out and gnaw into your pelvis? :P

As an example I used to use Ernie Ball strings and had to change strings every three weeks. With Elixirs I need to change strings every 3-4 months, so I actually save money. As for the Elixir bass string, if you try the 60 let us know how it works out as its something I've been considering myself.

Thanks a lot for such quick feedback!
I definetly plan doing it sometine, but the price of the single bass string is huge: 12,40€ so i don't know realy if it worths the pain. It should be about 4 or 5 euro, right? Anyways, i agree with technomancer... considering how long they are supossed to last, Elixir should save money indeed. Plus i am lazy when replacing strings. |

![]() Its all down personal preference/chemistry. I have tried just about every sort of string on the market for electrics and IMO, Elixirs don't offer anything particularly special. The electric strings are so-so, but my god, the acoustic strings are awesome. Martin SP's do the job better for half the price. Its a no brainer really for me! On the other hand, I work in a shop, so I have the benefit of being able to try all of these strings for free ![]() |
