I vote COW. The ebony fretboard still feels better then the rosewood on all the other 7s I've played before and since, and that includes my JP7. Slap some elixir baritone strings on the bottom and you are set.

I vote COW as well in that price range. Used, they can be pretty cheap if you shop around.

I've owned both and liked the Blackjack much more. I just thought the Blackjack sounded better and was more versatile. Also, my COW had problems staying in tune and the Blackjack rarely went out of tune. However, if you are just looking for a good rhythm guitar, the COW is a good choice as it seems to be designed for that. If you feel that later down the line you may want some versatility, I'd go for the Blackjack. Also, the Blackjack produces some amazing clean tones...

I say the Schecter's the overall better value, and the COW will only get you by for so long before you tire of it I think. Ebony boards are nice, but even in my experience, I hardly even touch the board, mostly just strings and frets for me.
And you can always stain the fretboard if you would like it to look darker, and the neck is uber comfortable too.
I'm assuming he's going to want to mass produce these rack pies, and why not? I love racks, I love pies, so put them together and you have pie covered titties. - JJ

This is SO much based on personal taste. ![]() I don't like active pickups for rhythm, i have no preference between rosewoood and ebony (I prefer maple to either), and I like the tone from a neck pickup. Additionally, I love having a tone knob available even if I rarely use it, and I think the COW is tone-knob-less. For me, it's a no-brainer, the Blackjack has a lot more of what I want from a guitar, and is cheaper to boot. So, really, think what specs you need in a guitar. You want taut strings, so the Blackjack takes an edge. You like ebony more than rosewood, so the COW pulls level. I've never played a COW, so I can't speak for Korean Jackson build quality, but Schecter has bar-none the best fretwork I've ever played on a Korean guitar, and buuild quality is right up there with Japan's heyday. the COW may be equal, but I can't say. So, the real question is, would you ever miss a neck pickup? Not, do you NEED one, but would you sometimes want to switch to the neck pickup or the in-between H-H setting (which is a super-defined rhythm tone, incidently), or if you'd want a coil-tapped sound for, say, cleans. Also, do you like EMG's, or would you be happier with passives?

hey! you fellas are so much help!
i fully agree that the blackjack is more versatile and more bang for the buck compared to the cow. the option of having a neck pickup is nice although i don't use it much except for the occasional lead work and clean melodic chording stuff which i can get by using the bridge pickup. for the money, you get a tonepros t-o-m and grover tuners as well as a set-neck. but somehow, i am attracted to the sinister vibe and minimalist approach of the cow. ok, you got me there. i admit my crush on a cow is only skin deep. the only plus is the ebony fingerboard and maybe the emg 707 for tight rhythm work. for sure the cow does not have the bells and whistles of the blackjack. that said, i am trying to work out a deal with antiochband/chris for his blackjack. wish me luck guys! thanks as always, dani |
