Hellraiser or Loomis sig
I'm looking to get my first 7, and I've narrowed the choices down to 2 gutiars, the Hellraiser and the Loomis model. I know that the Hellraiser sounds pretty killer but it doesn't have a trem, which I would like very much, but it has a rosewood fretboard (which is not a problem, I just prefer the look of ebony's). On the other hand, I've never played the Loomis model, and I don't know how an Ash body with a Maple neck sounds. But it DOES have a trem (OFR at that) and the maple board is very sexy. But the Loomis costs about $200 more.
I'm going for that really heavy, Nevermore like sound. If you want to take my gear into consideration, I have a VHT Pittbull Fifty/CL 50W head, with VHT 4x12 and 2x12 cabs. Thanks for the replies. ![]() |

Well man the Hellraiser is an all Mahogany guitar with a rosewood fretboard. Now i havent played it in person but to me that means a really thick warm sound. There are plenty of dudes on here with a Hellraiser so they can probably comment better.
Like you said with the Loomis its an Ash and Maple combination. To me that gives me the impression of a really clear sound but not thin. They are really 2 different beasts man. I would go with the one with the options that suits you best. |

Well, if you're going for the recorded on past records nevermore sound, i believe jeff used a hellraiser on the last one, and he's used EMG equipped schecters and LTD's since around Dead Heart times. All of which had mahogany bodies if i recall...

i'd go for the Loomis, but then, i like a guitar with a trem.
I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate. We'll cross the streams. |

The Loomis is very... Well, Loomisy in sound, it carries a lot of punch and clarity and the lead work can still get fat and smooth if you want it on the neck pickup. However, it is a tad lacking in warmth to get that real chunkey Loomis sound in the rythem department, but it is still very close and very full, and sounds awesome, I'm very pleased with it, for Nevermore sound and beyond.

To me, the Loomis would most definitely be worth the extra $200... Basically because I prefer brighter sounding guitars as it is easier to dial out excessive brightness than dialing in definition.
Other than that: You want a Floyd - the Loomis got a Floyd. Cheers Eske

I would choose the Loomis.
Floyd Rose baby! Ash is a medium tone wood. A very nice wood. A lot of great Strats were made of Ash. |

I loved the Loomis model, and I'm not a big fan of 7-string trems!
My favorite feature is the all maple neck. I was thinking of putting a warmoth all maple neck on my Schecter. They're both REALLY nice instruments though.
