Looking for some instrument feedback..

Hey guys. I ran into a few of the members at Jemfest last weekend and was wondering if I could get some more opinions. I brought a couple of my guitars with me and the feedback was good, but I'd like to know honestly what else floats your boat. Check out my site and some of the pics and let me know if you like what you see and what else you would like to see. I'm always looking for the next challenge and I'm planning an 8 or nine string fan-fret in the next six or eight months. Thanks for the help.

Hey, i just saw this thread, sorry bout the delay.

The two that i played there were AWESOME. i still think that the 6 string you brought with you was the lightest guitar I've ever picked up. It was REALLY comfortable too. I know Angel got a chance to play them as well. He sounded impressed.

Its good that you signed up here. Once i scrape together some money, i'm totally gonna have you do some work on my S7.

Good stuff. I like that body shape, the headstock on the two guitars on the "custom guitars" page, the finish on multiwood guitar, the fact that you offer floyds, the kind of scalloped/burned body w/the scalloped fretboard and the fact that you're in the same state as I am.

I'm not terribly wild about the little headstock that kind of reminds of a music man.

Sent you an email, too.

I know nobody wants to hear that their baby is ugly, but...

I really don't care much for the design or the proportions of those guitars. I can definitely see Carl Thompson influences, but the flow and balance of the body shapes really aren't aesthetically pleasing to me.

"Where dreams become reality" has got to be the biggest cliché tagline used by gazillions of custom shops everywhere. In fact, LGM guitars used it a few years ago, and i convinced Jeremy to drop it.

Well, for the price of that 7 in the classifieds, honestly I would want an OFR in it, also neck through but that's just a personal preference. I don't mind the shape too much, but some other personal things I don't like are the arm contour and basswood. But seeing as you're a custom shop I imagine you offer other stuff though.

Thanks. That all means a lot coming from Mister Negative Pants. I don't mind hearing that my baby is ugly since my two daughters are far from it and the body design in question isn't for everyone. That's why I started this thread. There are dozens of shapes that I find horrendous yet some people pay to have their guitars cut into such shapes. Thanks for being honest.

As for the cliché, there is an inlay design I've had for years that practically justifies the use of it. When I finally commit it to pearl I'll be sure to let you know.

Thanks for the honesty and yes, I am a custom builder and will put a toaster and a TV in a guitar if that's what the customer wants. Each guitar is unique (like the ad says) and I have no desire to mass produce a model. I do like to experiment though, hence the basswood. You can't be sure what a wood is going to sound like when you work it just because someone else has used it. Sometimes you just have to try it out for yourself.

kherman is a jewel in the rough
Definitely a unique design.
I'd be worried about snapping a horn off though.

I must admit, I'm prefer more of a traditional Soloist style.

But, then again, I do own a Fernandes Ravelle.
Which most LP purists feel is too out there.

Things that I prefer.
Full access to upper frets. So deep cutaways are a must.
Neck thru body.
No heel (or at least contoured)
24 frets.
24 3/4" or 25" scale.
25 1/2" on 7 strings.
12" to 14" fretboard radius.
Dunlop 6100 jumbo frets.
Floyd Rose(OFR) with locking nut.
Inline headstock. (thought the Schecter C1 or PRS 3x3 headstocks aren't bad)
Tilt-back headstock. Don't like string trees.
H/H pickup config.
Controls simple (1 volume, 1 tone, 3 way toggle)
Volume knob away from bridge enough so I'm not always bumping it.
Neck profile. Medium C shape (or just slightly thinner). Not too thin. Not too thick.
Ebony boards.

On fixed bridge guitars, I like Carvins idea.
String thru body with a recessed T.O.M. for low action.

More on the headstock design. I prefer a Jackson Soloist, Ibanez RG, Carvin '91 pointy, or ESP MII.

I don't dig these headstocks. MMs, Caparison, Fender, Carvin current inline, Washburn Nuno, Dean wings, or anything that looks like some 60's retro (kay, mosrite, tiesco, sivertone, Reverend, Italia) design.

I think carved tops like on a ESP Horizon are nice.

Cosmetics?
Neck binding is nice.
Headstock binding too, depending on shape.
Body binding can look nice too depending on contours.
Faux binding looks cool too (colored top/natural edge).
Simple inlays or no inlays. "Tree of life" stuff is too busy.

Here's what I would do with your shape.

Before

After.

I just thought your horns bulbus ends were to Bass like.

I agree with Darren and Herman- the headstock reminds me of a MM Bongo, and it seems more 'right' with the horns having a bit less mass.

You've got your head down
You've got your eyes closed
You look so pitiful now

Your body encrusted with ash
Breath heavy with toxins
Hair singed and matted
Clothes frayed and burnt

You are left with nothing
