you guys say the older UVs are good, does that mean the UV777BK guitars aren't that great or subpar in some way?

No the 777BKs are great guitars... they just don't come close to the original ones in my opinion. This is largely due to the fact that the have different neck profiles and now they are equipped with edge-pros instead of lo-pros. Many people on this site own and love the newer ones. I just prefer the older ones.

For Sale:

Ibanez RG7CT w/ UV case - $1800 plus ship/paypal

2008 PRS Custom 24 10 Top w/ case - $2200 plus ship/paypal

PM me for more information

Hey everyone i still greatly appreciate all the help you've givin me especially since this was my first post. i love the look of that universe but the amount of money and time is a bit of an issue i have been looking at a 7620 for a little bit now and think since its cheaper i may just have to go with that, but im still gonna try for the universe, i wanted to ask if anyone knows how good i beleive it would be called the "cutaway" on the 7620 looks much better than the universe. maybe its just the way it looks but it looks like where the neck bolts on is rounded and would be easier to play up high on the 7620, any opinions on this?

The newer Universes, the UV777BK models, have that also. But the older Universes from the early '90s had the old-style bulky neck heel. The new heel, called the all access neck joint (AANJ) makes it MUCH easier to reach the upper frets, but some people say at the expense of tone. Personally, I would go with a 7620 over a UV777BK based on price alone. To me, used UVs are way overpriced, considering they're basically just tricked-out RGs.

thats basically what i was thinking, my friend said dude, just get green pickups and slap them in a 7620, kind of to mock me but yeah saving 500 dollars sounds good to me

To each their own on that one I guess... I disagree with everything in this statement except for what AANJ stands for... and I don't even notice the heels when using the upper frets...

7620's pwn. They are the international workhorse of the sevenstring community, and they are perfect.

Oh, I admit that the UVs are nicer than RGs, but enough so to justify the difference in price? Not to me.

I owned a UV7BK back in the day and never perceived a problem with upper-fret access, but I'm a little pickier now.

7420 doesn't have the lo-pro 7 edge tremelo that the 7620 does. - This is the same trem that is on a Universe. If your choice is now between the 7620 and the 7420, definately get the 7620.

EDIT: To distinguish between the 7420 and the 7620 in online pictures, look at the pickup tabs. The tabs on the 7620 will be pointy and triangular in comparison the the 7420's who will be very round.
