The Schecters are certainly shreddable, but they do have very thick necks. If you're going to pony up the $$$ for a Universe, you should also consider the EBMM JP7--personally, I think it's a much nicer guitar than the Universe in the general category of "basswood-bodied shredders."

JP7 FTW.

Personalley I'd say I preffer Schecters because I don't like my necks too flat, I like them better beefy, and my Loomis is awesome, sound-wise and neck-comfort-wise.

However, I do enjoy my JP7 is miles more. It's just fucking insane.

i'm a local Ibanez lover, but have been wanting that Loomis Schecter ever since i got to play a Hellraiser at GC last week.

good luck!

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

Thats a very misleading comparison to make. Ibanez don't suck. Fender;s do.

I'd go for the Ibanez especially the 7620 - it is THE workhorse seven string, and you will not find a single owner on the forum who doesnt love their's to pieces. They arent the prettiest but NOTHING stock comes close to the 7620 in value for money and sheer playability. The specs on the guitar are just obscene for the price. You are getting Made In Japan too, something you reall dont see much from Ibanez nowadays without paying through the nose for it.

The necks on the 7420,7421's,7620;s and 7621's are without a doubt the best necks Ibanez have ever made after the really old Universe necks. Hand crafted and profiled rather than by a machine like all the new necks, and they have a much more comfortable profile than the Wizard II-7.

Finally, parts are reasonably easy to come by - any given month at least one 7620 is parted out here or on eBay, which is a shame, but...

While yours may be roughed up, you can find mint ones without too much difficulty. I believe there is one for sale in the Guitars for sale section that still has the original strings and Ibanez box.
Besides, I'd actually take a slightly scrathed 7620 over a fresh one. With a fresh one you will be VERY paranoid about scratching the finish and ruinning the instrument.

Finally, these things hold on to their value second hand very, very well. People always want one, so if you (inconcievably) want to sell it, it will NOT be hard.

Man, i just gotta say that Schecters are amazing guitars. I'm totally an Ibanez guy, but i love schecters as well. I would love to have a loomis and a hellraiser.

I got the Schecter Hellraiser and let me tell you, this thing is a beast ... and the neck isn't too thick in my opinion, at least I've had no trouble at all playing on it, just requires a bit of time to get used to it buf after a while it feels better than thin necks actually !

That's it. Too bad you can't go out and try them. I think they have very different vibes.

RearyGay is on a distinguished road
I don't mean to hijack this thread, but it SEEMS to be about the same topic that I'm wondering about:

I'm looking to get my first 7, and I've narrowed the choices down to 2 gutiars, the Hellraiser and the Loomis model. I know that the Hellraiser sounds pretty killer but it doesn't have a trem, which I would like very much, but it has a rosewood fretboard (which is not a problem, I just prefer the look of ebony's). On the other hand, I've never played the Loomis model, and I don't know how an Ash body with a Maple neck sounds. But it DOES have a trem (OFR at that) and the maple board is very sexy. But the Loomis costs about $200 more.

I'm going for that really heavy, Nevermore like sound. If you want to take my gear into consideration, I have a VHT Pittbull Fifty/CL 50W head, with VHT 4x12 and 2x12 cabs.

Thanks for the replies.
