Seven string drop tuning

I know, been discussed a million times... humor me, please

Got some new strings (optimum tension set, of course), getting fretboard and guitar cleaning kits, gonna sit down with all that and plenty of printed out info on my licensed FR and get it all set up, real nice...

But the question is, what tuning? I really like drop tuning, so drop-A seems a natural... but on the 6-string, I was really getting into drop-C (I think? Full step down, low string dropped one more step)... I liked the feel and the sound... so to replicate that on the 7, I'd need to do drop-G... right?

So... how muddy, if at all, is that low G gonna be? Anyone tune like this, or similar? How's your mileage?

(The strings, FYI, were bought with drop-A in mind)

That depends on your pickups and other gear, really. I tune to drop Ab, and it sounds great, but my previous setup didn't handle it so well.

If you have a heavy enough string, try out Open C (GCGCGCE), its simply amazing, giving you one finger barre chords across 6 strings and then regular chords with the G on down. Its brutal, inspirational, and ungodly heavy.

Another cool one is to drop your low B to an A#, and then tune all the other strings up a half step (basically In Flames' drop tuning with an extra high string), that's really cool, heavy, and has loads of clarity with the right pickups.

I'm assuming he's going to want to mass produce these rack pies, and why not? I love racks, I love pies, so put them together and you have pie covered titties. - JJ

Tune Drop B. I played with 9-54's on. Just take all the strings up a tone. It sounds awesome. I know your gonna @#$%@ yourself, because you cant imagine tuning that high, but it really is an awsome tuning on 7.

+1 to what TomAwesome said.

I'm currently in drop G and it works well, a little muddy because the pickups suck. My 7 has an extended scale though which makes quite a substantial difference. Drop G should do fine for you with the right set-up, I haven't played a standard scale 7 for a long time so I can't say for sure.

Conversely, Drop C with a high G string.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,

I'm all for the SYL Open C tuning, I don't know if it''l work fine on a standard scale but wiht thick enough strings it should be ok.

Wow.... that's a lot of suggestions, thanks!!

Part of what brought up the question is worrying about setting the intonation and spring tension... I'd like to do it once and be done! I went for a custom set of strings, balanced tension 9-68... of course, I'm realizing now I should have done 10's or 11's, if I wanted to down-tune... ah well, we'll see how it goes!

Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post

Dissociation is on a distinguished road
I play drop 'A' on all my guitars, I use 009-054's on all my seven string guitars and I dont seem to have any problems.

I hammer the trem all over the place and they stay in tune fine, I think the secret is regular setup and just keeping an eye on your guitars.

I was thinking of dropping lower at some point, but dunnno if I can be arsed with having telegraph pole wire on my guitars for strings!

+1, a friend of mine did that and it sounded pretty good.
