Laminated Necks: Necessary?
As some of you know, I'm looking for my first seven string. I've actually decided to save my money for a Carvin DC727. Here's how the specs look so far:
Standard Alder body Birdseye maple fretboard Color: Yellow on flamed maple with blackburst edges (think bumble bee )Active electronics (because of many bad things I've heard here about Carvin's PU's) Graphite saddles If there's anything here that you think I'm making a mistake on, please inform me, but my real question is about the neck material. Is it necessary to have a laminated neck for strength purposes? Would you prefer it? If so, what would be the best option?
I'm pretty sure I want a neck that's primarily maple for stability and tone (as opposed to mahogany). Also, necks that are primarily made of exotic woods like koa cost much more, and I'm not sure they're worth that. What would you suggest? |

i would recommend a 3 pc Rock Maple/walnut strip/Rock maple neck, with a satin clear finish on it. sonically its wonderful, and the stability is unsurpassed. And you dont neccessarily have to go active electronics, if you think Carvins PuPs are tits up, try out a couple DiMarzios before you have to route the body for EMGs or the such.
but thats just my two cents... Looking for an Ibanez RG970XL |

Not necessary, from what I heard the non-laminated necks carvin makes are reinforced with carbon fiber just in case, so they shouldn't warp too much. I'd still get one just cause they look awesome and you can never reinforce a neck too much

Mmm, maybe this should also be a place to settle this one.
Are Carvin stock PU's really that bad? |

I don't think so, but again it's subjective.

i never trust stock pups, I usually trust one of two names, DiMarzio (minus the New 7 disasterpiece theyve created) and EMG...
again...only my two cents |

Get SS frets, and you might as well get a graphite nut if you're getting the saddles.
I have a 5 piece maple/walnut neck on my 747, but I don't think it's necessary. I just ordered a stop-tail 747 with a 1 piece mahogany neck. -W |

i don't think laminated necks are necessary for stability on carvins... i have two 727s, one with a 2 piece mahogany neck, the other with a 5 peice koa neck w/ 2 maple strips. i find both to be equally stable... it just comes down to what kind of tone and look you want when deciding between the two.
also, make sure you get stainless steel frets, you will not regret it. |
