My First Seven String: The Dilemma
I only have six string guitars as of now. Seems to me like the perfect opportunity to get myself a nice seven. I have a bit of criteria that I would like it to follow.
I want a guitar with optimal sustain. Hence why I ruled out trem systems. The guitar that interests me the most is the Schecter Hellraiser C7. I've played I and I thought it was godly. However, I've recently heard some bad things about it. What is your opinion on it? I've also checked out some Carvins and Ibanezes(?). The main thing that turned me away from them leaves me with a question. Is an extended scale preferable to keep the low B from sounding loose/muddy? Or is 25.5 fine? I generally trust Carvin's products (VERY happy with my V3), but I've heard bad things about their pickups. Not to sound cliche, but I play primarily metal, if that's a deciding factor. Thanks in advance for the help. |

From what i hear about carvins, the pickups arent BAD, per se. But if you want to change them you'll have to tweak your pickups.
The 25.5" scale is really workable, but an extended scale helps. You'll just need bigger strings for the same tension on a 25.5" scale. If you're looking for a good guitar to see if the seven string is for you, you can usually get a used Ibanez 7621 or 7421 (Fixed bridge versions of the 7620 and 7420) for around 300-350$. Change the pickups and you've got an excellent quality guitar. But the C7 Hellraiser and C7 Blackjacks ARE excellent guitars, and would make great choices as well. I love my Hellraiser, not a single complaint about it. And I'd kill for a Blackjack to go along with it some day.

Keep the options down and you can get a Carvin for under a G with a hard tail.

ESP-LTD's are great guitars (though I have little experience with the others mentioned)
On eBay right now there are 5 listed, including an SC-607 (Stephen Carpenter model) with EMG's Good luck, whatever you decide! Remember to post pics when you get one!! ![]()

No I believe the 7321 is the only production sevenstring hardtail right now. My 7620s were made in '99 and '98 if that gives you a time frame... They are older Ibanez RGs that were made in Japan and are quite high in terms of quality and you would easily be able to find one in good condition and upgrade the pickups to whatever your taste was and it would fit quite comfortably within your price range.

Schecter makes awesome quality guitars. I'm simply in love with my Avenger 7, now that I changed the bridge pickup to an X2N7, which just sounds ungodly. If you go for a lower priced Schecter and just change out the pickups with the money you save, you'd have a great guitar!
That and Schecter sent me a free push-pull pot through Guitar Center because the sales guy messed up and reccomended a long-shaft pot instead of the short-shaft. And a free sticker. Huzzah!
I'm assuming he's going to want to mass produce these rack pies, and why not? I love racks, I love pies, so put them together and you have pie covered titties. - JJ
