Getting a carvin 7 string
soon i'll no longer be a 7 string virgin, and i wanted your guys' opinion on the specs of this carvin 7.
dc727 black hardware phase inductor for humbuckers stainless steel jumbo frets engraved trussrod cover tungoil finish with a black stain on flame maple and matching headstock straplocks maple neck and koa body. i'm still not sure of the woods i should use, but i'm sure you guys can point me in the right direction. |

Carvin's a great choice.
I've been playing my DC747c since 2001 and have really enjoyed it so far. As far as wood I picked Koa as my main wood with a quilt top. The thing cuts through the mix very nicely. |

Have you thought about scale length? You should get at least 25.5"

Any woods will be great man, it all depends on what pickup you use to compliment it. Alder body/maple neck Carvins sound amazing, as do mahogany ones, koa, whatever. You just have to get the right pickups (assuming you don't like the stock ones, which I don't).
Definitely go with an ebony fretboard. I also think the phase switches is a pretty useless function, If you actually are familiar with those and like them, then obviously disregard what I'm saying. He doesn't have a choice there, all Carvin 7s are 25.5 (which is fine, though I like 27's too). |

Congrats, you'll love it!
sounds good to me , and I agree with Nick , the pick ups really change the way these guitars sound quite a bit. My Bareknucle Nail Bomb arrived today so those are finally going in . You say black hardware but you don't say floyd/hardtail? I love mine , it's a great playing/looking guitar. I went all mahogany with mine and it's still a bright guitar., so I don't think the woods are all that important. I've got a USA Jackson soloist that is a maple neckthru with alder wings and an ebony fret board and it's no where near as bright as my Carvin. their stock pickups are jsut (to me anyway) very thin and bright sounding.
Can I be the devil on your shoulder?

the phase switch will put your pickups out of phase with each other in the center switch position. What that does is basically thins out your tone significantly and it gets a kinda twangy or even gutteral sound to it. It makes some cool clean tones and can sound really good for percussive guitar riffing. For the extra 10 bux, i think its worth fooling around with. I mean your buying a Carvin, what's 10 more bux?
