I play GCGCFAD and it rules ... you get that unmistakable drop C attack and you have regular power chords for the 7th string. I such a huge fan of this tuning.

modern metal attack and low end sludge. i kinda hang around in the drop C territory ... when you do that and hit the low notes, they sound lower because the ear isn't used to hearing the open 7th constantly.

not only that, but you said you're bandmate is using drop C ... it's essentially taking what he has and adding a low G for some lows that only you'll be able to do. this tuning makes the most sense if you guys want to play and be playing the same thing in the same place. not only that but open drop C chord sounds different the C played as powerchord on different frets ... i mean it's the same notes, but the open nut resonates in it's own special way ... and you'll both be doing that together.

plus you get those cool double power chords (GCGC) ... and accidentally hitting your G when you slam down on open C is fine. that's a perk, i wouldn't do it for that reason of course.

have you tried that on your 1077XL? it's awesome on mine ... still plenty of definition ... you jsut gotta be careful not to pick to hard on the low powerchords as they sometimes sound out if you dont attack them correctly.

Leave your low b there and tune the rest of your strings up 1 step (F#-B-E-A-C#-F#)

I would just tune the "B" to an F, (like how you play a 7 in Drop-D by tuning the "B" down to A).

I wonder what type of string gauges you would have to use to make that feasible. I'm interested in trying out that tuning on my seven.

I'd say something like (from lowest to highest): 048, 038, 028, 020, 014, 010, 008.

You act like you'd need some kind of bizarre string gauge to make it "feasible." The only special string you'd need would be the one for the high G and most shops carry a .008 gauge string, which should be perfectly fine for that tuning.
