half the depth of the side dot? thats a deep frigging scallop... i went maybe 30-45 thousandths of an inch deep on my scallop, and its plenty deep enough, without going into the side dots...

I'm kind of beginning to think that it depends on the neck. I love my scalloped strat, which has a very deep scallop. But I scalloped my Jackson with the sustainer very slightly and I'm not sure that it's too much better. There's not much neck there. I may work on it some more.

IMO a scallop is deep enough when you can play it and not feel any wood under your finger tips. That's what allows you to grab the string full force. But losing the fret markers sucks! So be aware.

I think that you get used to it after awhile and your touch adjusts. Your ear will automatically sort it out for you given time.
