Interesting that this post would come up tonight, as my friend just did a scallop on his mexican strat. It plays much better. I would definitely recommend the scallop. I'm going to buy back the C7 Blackjack I sold and scallop it on all 24 frets - a partial up to the 10th and full from there.

i don't think you need to re-fret for a proper scallop job. I just did a cheap peavy predator neck and it actually turned out pretty nice. Maple board, dots still intact, frets are clean, etc.
As long as you tape the frets over liberally, you'll be fine. I just got a jackson neck off Ebay that I plan on scalloping and installing on my KV3. I didn't have the balls to scallop the original neck, because it's nice as is and it has inlays that are known to pop out during scalloping jobs. I can't freaking wait to get it done. I can't put this POS peavey down b/c it's so fun to play now. My Jackson is so much nicer, but feeling the board now is just weird. If I do a good job (prooving the predator wasn't a fluke), i'll scallop the original neck and just keep it shallow near the 6th string to keep the bulkiest part of the fin intact. if i get my camera fixed, i'll post pics. |

There's a pic for that? That refers to a deep scallop, which is pretty risky on some boards. Dan Erlewine's book has a fair bit on scalloping I seem to recall. |

Have you tried Dunlop 6000 wire? It's taller than 6100.

I haven't. I'm trying to find out what is on my S2120xav, which is plenty big really. I don't think I'd do both. Scallop-wise I'm thinking of going down maybe no more than 2-3mm, though a refret might be an interesting project too.

Your frets should be the Xtra Jumbo variety. I used to have an M-307. Those frets are huge!
