If i were going with an all-Koa guitar, i'd opt for tung oil over the whole thing instead of a glossy finish with a burst.

Koa is amazing. My original guitar teacher scored a Carvin offset v in Koa, even with the EMG's he had in it, that thing had the sweetest high end I've ever heard on a guitar, singy, with just a hint of screech to give it some attitude.

My first Carvin 7 is going to be used, my second though ....whoa, watch out world.

I would strongly suggest you at least go with a tung oiled neck instead of the finished neck. The tung oiled neck will be faster and smoother to you than the Carvin finished neck (I have access to both at the moment and the tung oil wins by a landslide; it's not even close) I'd also go over to Warmoth and see if they have any of those Anderson single coils left if you want the 747 instead of the 727 (I think they were int he clearance bin or something). Otherwise, I think I'd skip the 747 for the 727.
Koa is a great sounding wood, and I'm sure you'll love the guitar when done (especially with the...you know )

Also, Carvin claims some people return guitars when the tops are too "showy", so ask for the most highly figured wood they have if you like that sort of thing If you want a cross between flame and quilt, dramatic streaks, or anything else for that matter, just ask and they'll go through their stock to see if they can match your request.

I actually plan to toss a blaze single in it.

If you don't have one yet don't buy one; I'm putting an Anderson single in my new UV so the Blaze will be free.

Why the 5 piece neck if you're going with koa? It's going to be bright already, all that glue from a 5 piece laminate will make it even brighter.

I have to agree with the tung oil suggestions as well. I'm not sure black burst edges on koa would look good, but you would have to go with gloss if you black burst the edges

That's going to be a bright mofo. What pickups are you going to use? I know you mentioned a blaze singlecoil. Blaze bridge and neck would be obscenely bright in that wood, I'm thinking though. You'll get more milage out of a coil tap rather then a phase switch too, probably. Why just the phase and no taps?

Carvin makes some good guitars though, I'm sure you'll be happy.

i have a 727 with a 5 piece koa/maple neck w/ birdseye maple f/b and maple top! . yes, it's bright, but nothing the right pickups won't take care. the stock carvin pickups will need immediate replacement, they sound like total ass with koa.
if i may make a suggestion chris, a blaze custom in the bridge will sound godly with the wood choices you're going for. i have D Activators (bridge and neck) in my koa 727 and have no complaints. if you're going for a brighter single coilish sound in the neck, the DA7 neck is what you want
