Setting the string-action right..
..that seems like a myth to me sometimes... for alternate-picking and fast legato runs, i like the lowest action possible, but for sweeping, riffing and speedpicking, i like it a little bit higher.
it seems to me that there is absolutely no solution to cover both, and to find a "perfect" action height. sometimes i whish it would be impossible to make settings on your guitar, because then i wouldn't mind about shit like this ...i know, sounds weird, but does anyone know this problem? ps: and sorry for the bad english, i know...
If you change 4 letters in "Mama", it's "Beer"!

Set your action higher then you like for both, and learn to play it that way. You'll find your tone improves overall and no one will really care how fast you can play.

Hmm... I set my action so it's low enough for hammer ons and taps, but I can still dig into the strings hard. It'll buzz a little when I do that, but that's okay (on electric, anyway...). Also, I sometimes use a slide on my left hand pinky finger, and super low action is no good for that.
I'm used to the relatively high action on acoustic guitars (esp. classicals), so I've never really liked ridculously low action. As it is, I usually pick every few notes of a pull off or hammer on phrase to drive a string to vibrate. I find it difficult to completely hammer on all my notes, anyway, unless it's around the 1st through 5th frets (well, okay, it depends on what I'm playing...). I've given up trying too hard to be like Holdsworth or Vai, though their musical ideas still inspire me, even if I don't have 1/10th of their speed or impeccable technique. Shred to livE!!!![]() |
