![]() ![]() | totally depends what music you're playing! if its basic riff-based rock then obviously he wouldnt be able to hit the same low notes as you unless he tuned down to drop-b/straight-b. But so long as you write the music co-operatively together then any combination of guitars and basses can work ![]() Life is a waste of time, time is a waste of life. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Welcome! I played 7-string in a cover band a few years ago and the other guitarist had a 6. I played all drop D songs right on my 7 as well as C and C# tunings. He had a 6 tuned to C and one tuned to D. I used my 7 and altered everything. It wasn't so bad but then I realised dropping my E sounded better having that open d chord along with his open d chord. When playing in C or C#, I just kept the tuning BEADGBE and played in C on the low B string without tuning it to C. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Think that the songs are wrote in E (if it's a 6 string standard tuning) so you can play that thing, but the 7th string it's going to be there an laughing. Do you get mi idea? Last year i used the UV on my band, the other player used a 6 string guitar, so my 7 string was for the songs played in D. Then we start tuning in B and drop A ![]() WTB Phonic Helix 24 mixer board Fuck US shipping only |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I've been in three bands like that. In the first band, Bob (TDW on this forum) played a sevenstring tuned to FCGCFAD and I played a sixstring tuned to EADGBE. It worked really well. Generally he played the really low parts and I played the high parts. There was this one song where he was playing these low power chords on the low F and C strings, while I was playing octaves around the 5th to 15th frets of the high E and B strings. In the next band, I played a sevenstring in standard and the other guitarist played a sixstring in standard. And then in the third band, I played a sevenstring tuned to ADGCFAD and the other guitarist played a sixstring tuned to DGCFAD. Never had any problems in any of those 3 bands. In my current band, both myself and the other guitarist play sevenstrings in standard and the bass player plays a 5-string in standard. Because of our style, we oftentimes use syncopated rhythms or riffs played completely in unison and then harmonized. We couldn't do that if one of us played a sixstring. Also, there are a few songs where we completely utilize the range of a seven and would be impossible to play on a six. But, depending on your style, you can very easily have a band with a sixstringer and a sevenstringer. I mean, different instruments have different tunings. You can play a guitar with a flute, a violin, a piano, a cello, and a trumpet, even though none of them have the same "tuning" and many of them work on completely different principles. I see no reason why a six string and a seven string couldn't play together (Orgy is one band I can think of where they had a 7-string rhythm guitarist and a 6-string lead guitarist). |

![]() ![]() | The guitarists in one of my bands use this configuration, both guitars in standard. The low B doesn't get much serious riffery, as most of the heavy riffs are on the E, but it makes a nice effect when it does get used. We're badgering the guitarist with the 6 string to get a 7, though D: |
