That's cool! Paul Gilbert did the exact same thing with his 7 string. I may have to try that. It makes room for some big stretches. Nice work.

That colour looks awesome Tony
Nice work dude! Can't wait to see it finished. You gonna' do the headstock too or leave it black ? It's not quite as shiny (mirror-like)as i was expecting but it doesn't look any the worse for it.That's THE shade of blue! What's the score with the Acrylic catalyser and all that stuff then? |

I didn't know Paul Gilbert had or was playing a 7 now.
The deeper part of the cutaway was done after drawing out the area to be cut, then refining it so the curves & such appeared more smooth, then I cut them out with my scroll saw, as I do not yet have a band saw, but I did it very slowly. The back of the cutaway just involved using a file to rough down the back of the cutaway & keep it flat, then I used my Ryobi Orbital sander to smooth it up once I had the rest of the body stripped. To sand out the inside of the cutaway, both for stripping & fine sanding, I wrapped various grits of sandpaper around a 5/8 socket wrench & sanded the inside, that way the inner surface of the cutaways would remain flat. I won't be shiny-mirror like until it has been buffed out. In fact, after you level sand, the guitar is quite dingy looking, the buffing is where it comes to life. I'm just a bit away from that still. Catalyst Acrylic is a Acrylic finish, mixed in with a catalyzer, or "hardener". The components can be found at any Sherman Williams. Using a Preval Spray Gun - Home & mixing the components as recommended by the manufacturer. My TFS6 has a translucent red catalyst acrylic finish, & for over 11 years now, it has stood the test of time with over 400 shows, 1500 rehearsals, & a few dozen worship services. It gets a lot of use & the finish holds up far better than nitrocelluose in my opinion. The Headstock is going to remain black, I didn't want to have to fool with re-applying the Ibby Logo.

It is similar.
That's interesting, he's tuned DDDCFAD. Thanks for sharing that. |

Same principle on the "get out of my yard" intro, its just the top 3 strings of the guitar tuned to "E" in different octaves.
Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high, Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie, Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally. Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread Its branches like a Temple overhead. ~Charles Baudelaire http://www.myspace.com/impurity Brutal Skullfucking Death Metal |
