Question Now is the time to buy J customs folks

Due to currency fluctuations my beloved RG8327 is now 1400 dollars. A STEAL... a few days ago it was 2400 though and before that it was 1600...

im gonna have to wait until this summer but if I am buying a guitar from there are they gonna wait till their exchange rate is peaked and screw me?

responses will be appreciated

(also this might be an awesome way to get a UV for under market price... if their economy fluctuates low enough)

also why is their exchange rate so unstable?

All Exchange rates are unstable, just some moreso than others...

I'd imagine they'd go by XE.com for exchanges, or a bank, which keeps things current. Currency Exchange is a very liquid market.

I go to XE.com-- the issue is is there anyone on here who has experience with Ikebe specifically and knows if they will wait until I can get screwed or place my order as it comes?

Honestly, there's an entire market dictated to trying to correctly predict fluctuations in foreign currency prices. They say 90% of futures traders record a net loss in any year of trading.

You could hem and haw and sit on the fence and spend days or weeks or even months researching trends, but honestly the mental anguish this will cause you is arguably not worth the return, barring any crazy fluctuations. Is the guitar worth $1400 to you? If you bought it for $1400, would you feel you'd gotten your money's worth, regardless of what happened to the price after that? If so, then buy. If not, pass, wait to see if it drops to a point where you'd be comfortable buying, but be prepared for the possibility that exchange rates will work against you and it'll actually sell for significantly more this time next month.

That said, are you sure it's not just on sale? I'm not very familiar with the FX price inquiry layout on our mainframe accounting system, but it seems like within the last two months the spot rate on JPY has actually been pretty consistant between 115 and 120 yen on the dollar - not the sort of fluctuations that will give you a daily shift of a grand.

Yeah a one day shift of $1000 on a specialty good is market crash evidence. Its probably on sale. I just wish they made the 8527s with dots instead of that gaudy vine inlay.

I'd suggest that also; the exchange rate for the yen has not really changed in the last year between my two trips to Japan, its only gone up by about 13¢...

I went back a few years, and I don't recall it dipping much past 110 on the dollar. If it fell that much, you either messed up the conversion or they're clearing it out.

Either way, I've never personally bought there, but I gather you pay whatever the FX rate is on the day of the transaction. I mean, look at it from their perspective - you're paying them in yen, effectively. Do THEY care if your yen are worth $1600 or $1400 on the day of the transaction? It's still around 190,000 yen to them, and in the japanese market yen is priced at 1:1 against the yen...

Nice! You went to Japan? Twice? I miss Japan. One of these days, I want to visit my relatives there and do some guitar shopping.

I'm pretty sure that as they're exporting it to you, they love it when the exchange rate is low.
