Different 7 string tuning -- anyone tried it?
The tuning in question being DADGBEA, basically Drop D + a high A string.
Whether it's laughable or irrational, this is the path that ALL great men walk!

depending on the gauge and scale lenth... i would say... a 6 on the top if you are using 9's and maybe a seven if you use tens.
I dont think an 8 will handle the high A comfortably... (i used to use them for the E and they had trouble not breaking in open G on a 25.5 scale guitar) depends how gentle you are and if you use a trem (sometimes you have to ::love:: her gently) |

There are some guys here using standard tuning with an extra high A string, courtesy of Garry Goodman... It can work brilliantly with the right strings.
Nothing like a good depressant to chase the blues away!

I do something similar as well. I tune my 7 string to c standard tuning. Not B. So what I do is tune it up to where the high string on the guitar is the 7th string like you mentioned...a high A string. I use lite gauge strings which is a 9-46 set and a 50 gauge on top. My guitar did fight me for awhile and did not want to stay in tune very well. But I kept messing with it and it finally worked its way to stay in tune.

I find the tuning A#-F-A#-D#-G#-C#-F quite interesting. Basically In Flames' tuning with an extra F and the added string tension makes the guitar sound really awesome.
I'm assuming he's going to want to mass produce these rack pies, and why not? I love racks, I love pies, so put them together and you have pie covered titties. - JJ

I am learning to play the 5 string banjo clawhammer style and am already making noise as well on the guitar......The question is if I add another High E string next to and on the outside of the Low E string and add a sliding capo to that new 7th string : when that string is capoed at the fifth fret as a high A will it be the right sound to drone for the standard guitar tuning played clawhammer style?
I thought this would be a good thing to know before waisting any money trying it................Thank you , David Filcek thank you for coming back so soon the drop D plus the high A for me seems to have the high E on the wrong side of the guitar I need to know about having it on the thumb side of the guitar.......but I would think you could get some great blue out of your tuning #8. The Low A side must also yield so very satisfying change I do not have a 7 string to make modifications to I would probably have to have a neck made and a bridge to match a corresponding nut and put it on a guitar or start from scratch....thus the reference to would it be wasting the money. Thanks again From Michigan |

I've always wanted a high A, but on a floyd rose, that sounds like trouble lol But it's about the only way you'd get me on an 8 string....

BEADF#BE is cool, also. You can move all your open chord forms down one string, and add an additional high string onto them. Creates some interesting stuff.
