Possible AX7221 project
Since I recieved my new S7320 (amazing guitar, BTW) I've been contemplating buying a cheap, hardtail seven so I can mess with different tunings. I came upon a used Ibanez AX7221 on Ebay that might work out as long as no one outbids me.
I was wondering if anyone has sanded the finish off of one of these? How does the mahogany look underneath? I would like to sand most/all of the pewter off of it and give it a trans black stain and finish it off with black hardware. I think it would make a nice, slightly distressed finish that could look rather evil. I've already played one of these, so I know I like the feel of it. I just don't want to have one that looks just like everyone else's. What do you guys think? Last edited by JeremyJ; 05-04-2007 at 04:32 PM. Reason: poor word choice |

That sounds sick. You should totally do it.
7StringofAblicK-This is my footswitch. it changes channels on my amp - just like on a television, but I only have four channels.

At that price, i think it would be a nice test guitar. Not much to lose (more time than money).
Now go and do it so we can all see what it looks like (and so we can do it after! ) |

7521s are usually as cheap and they are much nicer. I would look for one of those first.

I already placed a bid on the AX, so if it doesn't work out I can look for a 7521 in the future. Plus this one already has a few minor scratches in the finish so it's a perfect candidate for a refinish.
Can any of you guys point me towards some black tuners and maybe some black fret marker overlays (if there is such a thing)? |

My bandmate has a 7521 (formerly zimbloth's) and holy crap that's a nice sounding guitar.

Hey guys, I'm reviving an old-ass thread because I just now got one of these things to work on (yeah, it took a little while longer than I planned). So I immediately took it completely apart and started sanding it down. The body has an insanely thick coat of poly or something. It's so thick that I've given up on the idea of sanding down to the wood to stain it. The mahogany does look surprisingly nice, though. I'm just going to smooth it out and give it a custom paint job.
The guitar came with a Seymore Duncan bridge pickup in it. It wasn't hooked up properly and it looks a little bit beat. After I refinish it and replace the hardware, I'm going to take it to a buddy at a local guitar shop for a complete rewiring job and hopefully it works at all. Do you guys have any feedback on Seymore Duncan seven string pickups? I looked all over it for a model number, but I couldn't find one. I'm not very experienced with aftermarket pickups either. |

I never tried a duncan in a 7..but my friend has a dimebucker from hell I think it is.. in his strat (6 string) and it's a great tone out of his marshall amp, it doesn't have something crazy about it that sets it apart in tone to my ears, but its more neutral and has nothing bad you can say about it really, try it out and see how it sounds
