In my opinion, a good way to go about it is... if you're using a standard 9s or 10s, play around and find out which gauge you like the feel/tone most (say, the .032 in the 9 set), and then find out what tension that corresponds to and build a set based on that. For example, if you think the .032 feels just right, but maybe the .042 is too lose... thats because .032 has more tension than a .042. If you liked .032, you could build a set like.. 9-12-16-24-32-44-58 or whatever... and that would be close to equal tension.

Just my 2 cents. I still end up using 10-58 or whatever mismatched sets due to necessity sometimes anyway.

I used to be a big advocate of super thick strings but ever since I got my JP7, I've been playing Elixir custom lights (9-46) plus a 56 low B and I love it. Sounds way better then my guitars ever did with a 68 low B and it is way easier to play faster and now that I've worked on my picking technique, it is just as fast as having super heavy strings on, if not faster.

Just Ernie Ball Regular Slinky 10-46 on the 6'er, add the low B on the 7 stringer, I think it's a .052 or .056.

Works fine for me.

Well the way i went about finding my gauge for 7s was to go by what i had on my 6s, which was a super slinky 9-42 set, so the natural progression for a B string was a 52. Plus, i noticed later on that that's what the B string is in a super slinky 7 set

When I had a 7 I would use 9 - 46 with a 60 for the Low B. In my last band, the other guitarist used a .75 which sounded way too boomy and kinda dead. 60 is perfect I think.

When I get another soon I'll probably try 10 - 46 (maybe 52) with a 60 again.

On my Strat I use 11 - 49. Ibanez it's 9 - 46 and PRS it's either 10 - 46 or 52.

One time, and this is no joke, a repair man broke my low B while he was messing with my pickup. He replaced my .059" with a .085" D'addario Nickel Wound Bass String. It sounded really bad to my ears, with all sorts of surprise harmonics and stuff. Needless to say, I took it off as soon as I realized it was putting my trem through hell trying to get it up to pitch.

I've pretty much always used 9-46 for the standard six, and either a .056" or a .059" or a .060" for the low B. Those gauges all work well for me.

8's feel too much like spaghetti in E-standard. 11's feel good, but I don't enjoy wrestling with my strings that much. I wouldn't be opposed to playing 10's, but I just feel that 9-46 is perfect.

There was a singer I knew one time that used .016", .022" (plain!), .032" (wound), .042", .070" tuned to drop-C. Those .022"s would destroy just about any set of wire cutters. I don't know how some people can manage such huge strings with such high tensions!
