I usually just keep my thumb right on the edge of the pick to do squeals, with about 1.5mm of on the other side between the edge and my index finger. If it doesn't sustain, you're probably just not hitting the node right on, so just move it around until you find it. If that doesn't help, maybe you need better pickups. I find that my EMGs really bring them out, moreso than the stocks in my RG7321.

Oh yea, and wrong forum. This probably belongs in Beginner Central or Lessons and Techniques.

Also, vibrato tends to go hand in hand with harmonics.

You have to try hitting the string on the space between the bridge and the 22nd or 24th fret (depend on the guitar) and in some point you will here a nice squeal. The vibrato gives to the pinch harmonic a nice sounds, just listen Zakk Wylde, Macho!

it's a technique you really just have to experiment with and work out on your own... it will come to you eventually. everybody seems to have their own approach to it.

It took me a few months to nail it down. Vibrato is extremely important as well. I do mine on an upstroke but it sounds really good even though it's strange to do it that way. Takes alot of practice man to nail it down, the G String is the best string around 3rd 5th and 7th frets to nail one, hope this helps.

Another thing, some nodes are easier to get to than others, but there are common general locations along the strings for many of the easier ones, which means that you can keep your hand in one spot and hit a harmonic with many different fret-hand positions. Just experiment and you'll find these common points so you won't have to go hunting every time you want to squeal.

Bending the note slightly out of tune back and forth, similar to a chorus effect. With guitars, this usually involves moving your fretting finger perpendicular to the strings while its sounding. It also works if you adjust the pressure you use to fret it, or if you move your finger along the string within the fret space. The principle is based on changing the tension of the string to change the pitch.

Finding the sweet spots for harmonics and making them ring longer is truly a matter of hard work. It's been one of my signature moves for nearly 5 years since I discovered it and sometimes (quite rarely, thanks God) I still fuck them up. The vibrato makes it sound cooler, à la Wylde, but is nowhere the "magic trick" to gain sustained squeals. Note : you know that you have the right move when they sound without saturation as well.
