I had my 7620's neck shimmed by Bill. It needed it bad. Now, it plays great. Of course i'll be disassembling it for another refinish.

The neck shim helped out alot though.

How can you tell if your neck needs shimming rather then just any other procedure?

well, in my case, i was doing some setup on a newer guitar i got, actually an older one, but new to me, and the truss rod was adjusted, the tremolo was in the right spot, but probably from the 12th fret on there was high action and it just got higher, i couldnt lower the trem anymore with out compromising the first 12 frets playing quality , so i put a shim inbetween the bottom 2 screws on my neck to raise the last 12 frets higher while leaveing the first 12 about where they were, it fixed it right up
