Buying a Seven String guitar.. help please?

... ive been wanting to buy a seven String guitar for age.s.. it almost intimidated me but now i think ill take the plunge... I'm a huge meshuggah fan and even tho most of their new stuff is played on an 8 string.. i would rather go for a 7 stringer before i jump straight to 8 (if the ibanez 8 stringer would even be available in my country)

i would just want your opinions for the best seven stringer i can buy ..
i have about 1000-1500$ to spend on it but there are so many models to choose from

The ESP stef7 looks pretty Decent ( i already have an ESP horizon and am extremely happy with it so i imagine it is the same shape and neck with an extra strings)

Also the Ibanez RG 7 ' prestiges seem to do the trick nicely... the guys from meshuggah dont seem to complain...

anyways i am asking your opinion because i live in a small country in europe (malta) and the music shops rarely stock any guitars worth over 1000$.. Let alone a seven stringer worth that.. the ones they had were cheaply built and i am looking for a well made instrument.. i will mostly be ordering online...

so please hlp me out thank you

Welcome!

This place is definitely becoming international. Personally, I love Ibanezes and the 1527 wouldn't be a bad choice but the Stef7 would probably be the better way to go.

well.
if your just starting out on a seven....have you played sevens before?
if not, i dont know if i would put 1000-1500 into a guitar your not going to love, you know what im sayin?
i start off with looking for mabye a 7420 or a 7620 both are ibanez.
i would say go for ibanez.
there my fav.
or mabye a hellraiser if you like a thicker neck and active pickups.

Ya this is the right plce if your'e looking for advice. If u look around here in the classifieds there is a good chance you will find a good, solid axe for a good bit cheaper than 1000 bucks. And you just can't beat an Iby.

Most of us here are Ibanez fans. Would you prefer a 25.5" scale or a 27" scale? How about pickups: passive or active? Most of the Ibanez models have 25.5" neck scales and passive pickups, and the ESP Steph models have (I think) 27" scales with EMG actives. Either way you'll have a great guitar, though.

actually i would have no idea if i would prefer a 25.5 or 27 inch... the difference would be tuning lower would be easier on a 27 inch right ? and would it make fretting harder cos of the longer neck ? I dont really have a a bias on 7 string guitars even tho i do think Ibanez rule the seven string world ... i Love ESP guitars but their seven string models look like crap and the only one i find that looks really good looks is a signature guitar which i usually am against buying ( no use paying an artist for a generic guitar with his signature.. wow im amazed ! )

Lower tuning would be easier because strings of a given gauge at a given tuning will have a bit more tension. Intonation will be better, too. Fretting really shouldn't be any harder unless the slightly wider fret spacing is a problem for you. I'm generally not a big fan of signature guitars, either, but the Stephen Carpenter 7-strings are good guitars with good features and a 27" scale. I do think it's silly to buy a guitar just because someone's name is attached to it, but I also think it's silly to refuse to give a guitar a chance for the same reason.
