Planned mods for Schecter C7 Hellraiser

Hi all,

I'm planning to mod my Schecter C7 Hellraiser so it has my favourite features from my previous guitars. First is by putting a Kahler 7227 hybrid tremolo in. Figure I'll need to add locking tuners too. Then I'm considering adding a Fernandes sustainer pickup as well.

1: Has anyone else added a Kahler 7227? Any tips/traps to watch out for?
2: I can't seem to find a 7 piece locking tuner set out there...everything seems to be a 6 string set. Can anyone recommend a 7 piece locking set they're happy with? Where should I look?

Thanks!
Dennis

I don't think the Fernandes will fit in an EMG pickup route

You can order sperzels individually, or in sets of 6 or 7.

That's ok, I knew I had to do some routing for the Kahler too.

Project Status

So I got a black 7 string Kahler 7227 hybrid tremolo from www.wammiusa.com. I installed it about a week ago and the operation was a success. Took the next step and ordered 7 Schaller black mini locking tuners from www.warmoth.com. UPS tracking shows they should arrive today...the project moves on.

try again

I just previewed the post and the pics were there ...ok, how about as attachments...here's the text that goes with the pics...

Attachment 1)
The original,

Attachment 2)
The patient, after the removal of the string guides and the beginning of the routing. I didn't have an actual router so bought a routing drill bit (you can sorta see it attached to the drill). I drilled 3 test holes about 1/2 inch deep which you see here. Next I measured 1 inch up from the bottom of the routing bit and put a piece of masking tape as a height guide to make sure I didn't go deeper than 1 inch in. By the time I finished the routing, the edges were nice and smooth (luckily the body of this guitar was soft and easy to work with) and the bottom was a horrible mess. But it was an inch deep and the Kahler didn't touch any wood so I figured that was good enough.

Attachment 3,4)
It took another couple hours to drill the new post screws, put in the Kahler, strings and set the intonation. The riskiest operation was drilling the holes for the big post screw holders. They required like a 3/8 inch hole and if I didn't get them the right distance apart on the first try, it would have been really ugly. As it was, I had a couple small chips break loose when drilling (which you can see if you look close)...other than that I didn't cause a scratch or dent to the front of the guitar so I consider the operation a big success. I did put a small scratch on the back when removing the string guides, but compared with what could have gone wrong, I'm very happy

Oh ya, I set the Kahler cam really tight and it's stayed in tune remarkably well with standard tuners. My Schaller locking tuners arrived this afternoon so I'll be retrofitting them next...I plan to loosen the cam to get more play in the trem.

That thing is pimp man! Nice job.

Kahlers only lower pitch so you can flutter but you've got to go down a bit before you can...soo...no, it can't flutter.

Flutter = moving the bar up and down pretty fast so going over and under the regular pitch

Flutter is pushing down on the bar slightly and then sliding off the end, or flicking/thumping the bar, getting the trem to vibrate up and down on it's own.

thanks

thanks for the good words everyone...

This is my 1st 7 string and I took a chance, I couldn't find any local to try so I ordered one from Drum City/Guitarland and the first time I played it...wow...I'd never played anything like it. At 1st I thought, I'll just get a 7 to doom around chords with and thought I'd go to one of my 6 strings for leadwork...then after playing with it I was like...I don't want to go back to a 6 string at all! I blew it, shoulda bought a 7 with a trem I wanted a 7 with a non-black finish, custom neck inlays, and carved top body...the only other production model I considered was the Schecter Jeff Loomis but by now I was too attached to my Black Cherry Hellraiser to even consider giving it up. Decided to mod the Hellraiser myself and am so glad I did

Next job, swap in the locking tuners...

Thanks to sevenstring.org forum for pointing me to Drum City, WammiUSA, and Schaller individual locking string tuners

That looks amazing! I would love to try that out.

I have had my Hellraiser for quite some time now(about a year), and it only gets better day by day.

Thanks...I've always wondered if I could have just 1 electric guitar that could do everything I wanted...the doomy dark chords and the occaissional wammy-lead stuff (though I'm not really a heavy "dive bomber", more a "destabilizer" I'm really excited about this project, hoping I might be on my way to the dream

Locking Tuners In

The next phase of the project is done...replaced the stock tuners with 7 black Schaller locking tuners. I like the black tuners much better than the stock black-ish chrome ones...the black tuners let the cool inlay around the headstock stand out more.

1st pic shows original tuners...
2nd pic shows lowest 3 strings with new tuners...
3rd pic shows what happens working on your guitar on the bathroom counter when a string jumps out of your hand and lands perfectly between a plugged in blow dryer and an electrical outlet... of course the bright blue flash of electricity and the smell of ozone was long gone by the time I took the pic
4th pic shows a full shot after installing the new Kahler hybrid trem and Schaller locking tuners...
