Where are the 14 string guitars?

I love playin my Martin D-12, and the thought occurred...what about the same concept with a 7-string! Not like those that are 12s with just two extra bass strings, but a octave higher doubled B-string? Am I the only one who thinks this would be very cool?

I just might contact some luthiers and see how much to create a 14-string, solid trem, electric. The problem is probably the fact of creating the bridge necessary...dunno anyone who makes something like that!!

The thing would need a truss rod made of cast iron, the diameter of your wrists.

I like the idea of an 11-string, actually. 7 regular strings, then double the 4 highest ones. That'd rule.

for the right price any luthier would get one machined for you, there seems to have been a fair amount of talk about 14 stringers as of late.

Anyway, update us if anything happens!

nice!

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

a 13 string would be ideal, cause you'd have a matching string for everthing except the low B. You know, the low B would have to have huge string spacing for 2 strings, and it just wouldnt be worth while. Why would you even need to have an octave string for it? It'd be loud enough. So 13 strings is fine ;p

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

Munky from Korn has one. And Head has a double neck 7/14.

butch will become famous soon enough
As an owner of a 13-string guitar (actually, the top half of a 13/7 doubleneck), I can attest to the fun of it. With the thickness of the B (or A) string, the guitar has an almost built in EQ. The 12 strings ring normally, and the extra B string resonates at the same volume. An extra B string might end up muddying the sound a bit much.

There was talk on Jemsite last year of a few 14 string acoustic guitarists. The guitars are, of course, custom built. Head, formerly of Korn, had Ibanez build him a 14-string acoustic, based on the AJ307CE. I played it for about five minutes. While the chords rung out nicely, single note runs were almost unplayable past the fifth fret. Munky’s K-14, however played extremely well.

As it was mentioned earlier, for the right amount of money, you can get anything built…

Cheers,
Butch

Some very good points. Yeah the spacing to double the B would be pretty large. Sounds like for playability the doubling everything but the bottom two would be best. Anyone already making those?
