Six string pickups in a seven string guitar
I feel like I already know the answer to this question but just for giggles would it work and how bad would it sound? I have a PAF Joe and a Mo Joe that I really like but the Dimarzio rep said they didn't have anything comparable in seven string models. I am getting a s7320 if the people at samash will ever ship it but I like the sound I am getting out of my s520 and would like to get that same sound from the s7320. Thanks

well, Bill Lawrence actually did that. He used pickups that had bars instead of pole pieces, and just shipped them with a mounting ring. i suppose its POSSIBLE, but one of your strings would be really quiet (if you mount it off centered) or you'd probably have a lower response over all if you centered it. All in all, not exactly the best idea

Thanks for the quick response. That is what I was thinking. Just wanted a second opinion before doing needless surgery.

You could do a pbass and split the pickup in half and shift one side to the B and one to the E although that might be more trouble than it's worth

That's a thought and one I may pursue depending on how bad the stock pu's are and if I can find anything close. I don't have any way to test sounds though except to buy em and try em which can get expensive. If I did split them would the two outer strings sound weaker than the others that will have two pole pieces under each string? And will it change the sound of the pickups?

I know its not exactly what you want but PAF7's arent too far away from either of the pickups you like. Have you tried them in mahogany?

Thanks for all the replies. I know it was outlandish sounding when I asked but at least I got some ideas. The PAF7's might be the best way to go.
