heh! actually, i never use both humbuckers. but i love the greasy single coil sound, especially with tons of gain for overdubing background lines or layered parts.

Let output and your ear by your guide. You know when you get too close, because notes on the higher frets start getting squashed. You can hear them compressed and getting gritty, especially on the clean channel. I like to set the end poles to slightly below the surface of the pickup, and then raise both sides to just before the notes compress. Then I dial in the other poles to match.

out of curiosity, about how high are your Custom and Jazz from the strings? which would give me a starting point. so far i'm getting super-thick mids from the Custom with a nicely moderate amount of high-end sizzle, but my amp is sharper than most.

I'll have to check when I get home, but they're pretty far back. The Custom is a really hot pickup, and the Jazz is fairly hot by neck standards. IIRC, the Custom is at least a 1/2" away from the strings. The fat mids are exactly what you should be experiencing. Looking at the the Duncan tone chart led me to believe that there would be less mids with the magnet switch, but in actuality it relocated the mids lower down the frequency spectrum. I really like the fat character of the pickup, it's like a JB on steroids.

my sucky flash pics don't really show the depth of the stain. it looks pretty cool with the chrome hardware. the neck plays well, super-thin like all 540S7s. the bridge pickup is a TZ7 + A8 magnet, and it has a huge super-thick high gain sound--the brightness of the alder really opens up the dark sound of the TZ7. the Anderson single-coil sounds really crisp and clucky like a Strat. the body and the finish aren't perfect--this was my S7 prototype, built before my mahogany one. but it sounds really good--i will definitely use alder for a 7-string build again.
