EMG Afterburner...

Sevenslingers!

Got 2 questions for ya, I have a Schecter Daimen 7 with the stock EMG HZ passive pups (

). They sound like warmed over poop.

. Has anyone tried using a EMG Afterburner or a EMG-SA to boost passive pickups? Im worried that it might just amplify the crappiness, instead of increase output.. Also, I know that EMG 707s and 81-7 use a larger housing and require routing in most guitars, but what about guitars with stock EMGs? Does the HZ have the same size housing?

The HZs arethe same size as the 707/81-7.

The Afterburner will boost output, but the pickups will just sound like a LOT of

now.

I'd say, go for the real dealios. They'll swap right in.

Thats what I thought.. But the EMG-A stills looks like it would be fun to have on at least one guitar! My Explorer had a emg 60 and 81, I might try to grab a 60-7 and 81-7 and see if it sounds as good in the Dami.. Anyone with a Damien have any suggestions?

Far more interesting to me would be the EMG VMC.

Yes, I have the afterburner.
For me:
High gain + AB = lots more noise, but yeah increased (and useless) gain
Clean + AB = a clean boost, a very notcable one, too
So it just basically boosts the gain w/o distortion. sort of like a booster pedal.
I suppose it could be used to push an amp over to distortion from 'near distortion' settings.
And yeah, the gain it outputs can be reduced, but I haven't found a use for it with distorted sounds.

as far as i know, the emg hz7s have the same size housing as the 707s, so it should be a clean swap, just remember that youll need to replace the hardware to accomadate for the active pups, ie battery room, different pots, different wiring schematics, the norm.

It is pretty useless on already dirty settings. Unless you use really low gain settings and I assume thats not the case. But on clean it sounds ok. Id rather use my Tube Screamer. That works great clean & dirty.

I swapped 707s into my Damien a few months ago and have been in heaven ever since. Forget the AB, it's useless as far as I'm concerned. I never hve been crazy about them. Get yourself some good EMG's and have fun. Then if you don't like the pups you get, all EMG's have quick connects to make it a 5 minute job to swap in a different model.
