Yeah, it's very interesting how the 7 changes your perspective. Even though it's just one extra string, my knowledge of theory skyrocketed after I got my 7. Same goes for creativity. I don't even always use my extra low B, but somehow it helps me write better stuff. It's presence alone puts more options at my fingers and broadens my scope.

Me too. I don't use the low B note too often myself, but I do use that string a lot. I just joined a new band and we already have 3-4 songs. In the one song, there is only one note that is outside of the range of a 6-string in standard, which is the D power chord I play in the chorus. In another song, the only notes outside of the range of a 6-string in standard are C# and D during the bridge. Another song the bass player originally wrote in E (on his 5-string bass), but when he saw I had a 7-string, he said "Hey, play that in B. I want to hear how it sounds." (the other guitarist hasn't bought a 7-string yet. Should have one by the end of this month, though) and I played it in B and he said, "Wow. This song is definitely gonna be in B. Just has a lot more impact." But we left the fast part in E at the end in E and added a cool bridge right before that played through B leading up to E so that the change didn't sound drastic. Then there is one other song I have that goes through a cool progression starting on E and ending on the low B where that open B string is essential to the way that song sounds. The most important note in the whole song.

But, the extra string really does change the entire way you think about the instrument and gives you so many more options (36 extra notes for me, considering my six-strings have all been 22 "fretters" ).

My friends are always having problems understanding why I play a 7 and want an 8. I just say "extended range--I can play things without the need to detune and still be able to do everything you can on a 6er." Then just the other day, I was browsing here and saw that video game music thread, and got inspired to play some Doom music. I had been playing for at least 10 minutes or so before I realized I was utilizing my low B without thinking about it. Really, I could have played it on a sixer, but just reaching my pinky over to hit that low note was so much easier than shifting everything lower--and that I did it subconsciously just completely blew me away.

It's really got me looking at buying another bass. Right now I've just got a 4 stringed ibanez, but I'm seriously looking at picking up a 6 string after. I just crave more strings now.

Hahaha, Doom had freakin' awesome music! I've also arranged some songs for guitar

There's countless examples of this. For example, that one latin-riff in Dream Theater's "Stream of Consciousness", right before the first solo. It's 1000X easier to play if you just play the E and F notes on the low B instead of on the E-string (and if you watch live at Budokan, you can see that that's how Myung plays it on his bass).

I'm also pretty excited at the prospect of an 8-string. I hope to God Rondo go for it, cause I'll be sure to get one. And if it's an Ibby, I might consider it (even if it's Indonesian-made *gasp* )...

Thanks

I'm actually not a fan of black/grind music. All of my band's stuff is extremely melodic--you can check it out in the myspace link in my signature

I'll post more finished stuff as I finish them.
