NGD (belated) - Carvin DC727 Walnut + Spalted Maple

My first 7!
I actually posted some pics earlier but thought i'd make a proper NGD post.

Specs:

5 Piece Walnut/Maple neck-through
Walnut wings with Spalted Maple top (unbound)
Solid Bridge
Black hardware
Rounded body contours
New headstock (reversed)
Ebony fretboard (unbound) - 14" radius, 24 frets, 25.5" scale
Diamond Abalone inlays
Gold logo
Active pups with all the extras (coil taps, phase switch, passive mode switch etc)

First thing was new strings, the stock ones don't play nice with drop C# tuning. I found a combination (thanks to that handy app for string tension calculations) that has a similar over-all tension at the lower tuning so no truss adjustment was required.

The Carvin pups: I like them. Mostly. Granted I've only had the guitar a few weeks, so maybe i'll change my mind, but as of now I'm thinking of replacing them. Problem is I've got these controls now (phase, coil taps etc) and the ability to switch from active to passive is seriously awesome, I'm not sure what other pup set could make use of all of that.

I'm a DiMarzio fan (my other guitar is a Ibanez JS90HAM with DiMarzio's and i love it) so i was thinking the DiMarzio D-activator X might be good for me. I've read on here that BareKnuckles are very popular but that would require routing my guitar which i would like to avoid if possible. Apparently the DiMarzio's can be sanded down to fit (?). I really don't know much about what pups work with what woods etc, bit of noob in that department.

Anyway, great guitar so far, Carvin really make some quality instruments, very fine workmanship.

Also, if anyone a bit more experienced has pup advice that would be appreciated

Beautiful!

One minor correction though: the pickups are still passive pickups – the "active electronics" refers to the active preamp. You can use any set of passive pickups and, as long as the wiring is correct, still use the active preamp.

Ah right, that makes sense. I foresee a lot of research on pickups in my near future.

Thanks!

You can file BKP tabs to fit them in, many have done so over here. Nice guitar Makes me wish I could order one from over here.

Cool, I'll be browsing the pickup section of this forum carefully then.

As for the order, I live in South Africa (Cape Town) so for me to get any kind of custom guitar from anywhere means I have to pay for shipping / customs etc, a bit of a pain but totally worth it.

The problem over here is Carvin forces us to use the official importer, that means paying twice the price asked to our USA friends...

Grab a Dimarzio D Activator or Evolution for the bridge and a Blaze for the neck!

very nice carvin. I just ordered a DC700 in all walnut with the reversed headstock like yours. Im glad I got to see your guitar as I now know that I made the right choice. You even got some really nice figure in the walnut. Congrats on a great build!

^ I agree. The spalt plus the flame is excellent but the neck is sexy too. Congrats on your new git fiddle, broseph!

Would you tell Picasso to sell his guitars?

Did you have to order something special (option 50-ish) to get a flamed walnut neck?
