Anyone Else Not Worried About Looks
do we have a lot of collectors on the forum. it seems to me a lot emphasis is placed on how shiny and pretty a guitar is. i guess it's all personal preference but a lot of people seem to put WAY too much stock into a guitars looks. mint this, mint that, i personally don't care as long as the guitar plays and sounds good. a chip or a scratch means nothing to me. i'm not saying one way is right and one is wrong but was just wondering if any other 7 string players think like me.

Some guitars suit the rough look better than others. For me more classic models like teles and strats just seem to look good when they're roughed up, but more modern guitars like RGs just look nasty with chips in them.
This looks awesome for instance:

Yeah I don't mind a bruised and beaten Fender but metal guitars need that super clean look to them.

New or used? For a new guitar I'm certainly not going to buy something that's beat up. I also think relic'ing is just plain stupid as I prefer to put my own milage on a guitar if it's new, but that's personal preference. Used? As long as the price is suitably adjusted no problem. Personally I tend to take pretty good care of my guitars, but I also don't freak out if I scratch or ding something.
Incoming It's a surprise

We just like looking at guitars and chat guitar while we're on this site.
It's not like that is all we are living for. It's just that if you see that one guitar that just makes you WOW, you could seem like you're overreacting for the other poeple that didn't think that guitar was so special. It's almost like hearing that favourite riff or solo or breakdown or whatever for the first time. You be like |

My workhorse guitars usually collect scratches/chips, which I don't mind. Adds character... gives the guitar a story. Not to say I'm not careful with my guitars (because I usually am) but anything in my collection that's unblemished remains that way because they don't really get played.

I want a new guitar to arrive in new condition, flawless. It will acquire chips, scratches, blemishes and flaws as I play it. I have some lookers, but none are pristine, anymore. Collecting guitars is silly, instruments are made to be played.
We ask for pictures as you can't tell me how good something is going to play in my hands

hmmm... so, if I snuck on stage before your gig and took a palm sander to the side of your guitar, you'd be okay with that?
I dunno, I like to keep my shit in good condition as long as possible. If it happens to gather some scratches or a dent or two along the way, sure I'd be pissed for a second or two, but all of the guitars I own are meant to be played, so as long as playability/stability isn't the issue, I don't think its that big of a deal. If I was a collector, then that'd be a completely different set of circumstances and priorities. |

I never said going out of your way to damage a guitar, just saying I don't do anything special/OCD to ensure it isn't damaged. Like bubble wrapping my guitar.

My Dean has a chip in the head, my tele has a dent in the neck. My strat is one only it's father could love, it has countless war wounds!
Gives em character I say, as long as you put them there through playing! If you take to your guitar with sandpaper and a chisel then you my friend are an arse hat! |

I bought all my guitars used, and they all have chips and dents to some extent (and some certainly more than others)...I really couldn't care less because it doesn't affect tone or comfort at all. IMO, in many cases, dents and chips give a guitar more character. I guess it makes sense to want perfection when you're serious about collecting, but I think looks and aesthetic damage shouldn't matter to people who play their guitars regularly.

I definitely do not want my RG/RGDs damaged. Strats and etc would be sweet aged.
Depends on the guitar to me. Music Facebook: www.facebook.com/lostindreamingSoundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/gsingleton Me:You could djent using a toothpick and aluminum foil. Michael T: Aluminum + Djent = Alumidjent Didn't Lace already do this....hmmmm |

I can't stand people that don't buy a guitar because "the tuners don't match the bridge" or "The floyd is chrome and not black".
Like seriously? Personally little things like that don't bother me at all. I do have preferences obviously and I think we all do and should but ultimately looks don't mean anything to me. Personally I love beat up guitars. More beat up the better, long as it plays well and holds in tune. |

some of the dent and scratched guitars i've bought online only had small scratches ON THE BACK OF THE GUITAR. yes the back, no one sees the back. i guess i should be glad people are that anal about little scratches here and there because it saves me $300-$500 a pop.

My S540 is beat to shit, and I think someone drowned my LPR. I like ugly guitars.
No seriously, I think my LPR was in a flood, nothing else explains its condition. |

I love my universe because it is in mint condition and i will always keep it that way. However I love a lot of my other guitars and they are beat to ..... My ibanez rg470xl has had all the paint come off, several dents, the trem looks like complete shit. I love that guitar to death and would never get rid of it, and it plays like a champ.
My main setup: Ibanez uv7bk green dot, Engl fireball 60, genz benz g flex 2x12. |

I think it's just something that, because there isn't a guitar that sounds exponentially better when its beat up, looks do matter when you're paying good money for these things.

If I'm buying it new, I'm ok with it having a few small dings, but not ones that cracked clear coat or chipped the wood.
Aside from that, dings, scratches, chips, scars and bumps are normal. A guitar is a guitar, those things will happen to it, no need to refinish it because you scratched it... I baby my V-Blade and K-7 a lot more than my RG7321, RG560 and telecaster, but I try not to ding them on purpose (TRY is the magic word, expect the tele, that one is a masochist) Morphesia (Black Metal) http://morphesia.bandcamp.com/ Squirrelly Arts (Industrial Metal) http://www.facebook.com/SquirrellyArts |
