NGD: BRJ black friday, hesperian 727

edit:
I probably should have held on to the pix before calling up Bernie, because what you guys see here is not a proper NGD. Bernie and I believe the guitar was damaged in shipping/handling, because it was NOT at all like this when Bernie last saw it. I know this thread has been receiving a lot of discussion lately, personally I think it's best to hold on some of the thoughts and maybe wait for other NGDs first, and also I will update my situation when the time comes, which is gonna a proper, happy NGD thread. I also sent a request to the mods to delete this thread.

Nice !!!

I WANT MY RICO .....NOW !!!!

Enjoy brother, looks super classy.

Kamikaze7 I for one value my guitars and gear like people value their kids - ....ing with my guitars or gear is equal to me molesting your kids - you just don't do it if you value your life...

Whiskey_Funeral For that much money I'd just put myself through Luther School and build the damn thing myself.

MaxOfMetal I just love guitars. It doesn't matter how many strings, frets, pickups, or wood used I just dig the .... out of them all.

well now that you mentioned it, it kinda starts to get me because i have no idea what to expect from a custom shop guitar. i will contact bernie about this and see what's up. but i am really lucky to be one the first guys to receive this special run of guitars

Yeah, it sucks to see such mistakes on what is a beautiful guitar. This is definitely something you wouldn't expect on a guitar in this price range, custom or not. Like I said, this is something that knocks a couple hundred dollars off of a $600 Agile.

Definitely follow up with Bernie. I'm sure he'd want to make this right and not leave you hanging. It seems he's hard to get a hold of now, but MTech seems to have special "Bernie Summoning" abilities.

Once again man, I can not get over that beautiful one piece, quarter sawn neck, really nice.

Wow that is a lot of mistakes, pretty simple ones too with a not properly laminated top. Why say '1 flaw' and post pictures of several others those and praise the heck out of an obviously sub par instrument though?

That last fret before the slant also isn't complete, but it is complete on NeoTheMaggots new BRJ. Pretty haphazard consistency there.

Is there a small gap between the book matched top pieces? I didn't see that on the other Rico ngd posted today.

If the only issue is the small glue mark on the end, I wouldn't care if it were me. Splitting between the top pieces would totally fail though. I've got one of these on order and I would be very upset if the top wasn't set right.

The guitar looks insane. About time to see nice pictures of the natural Hesperians!

Shame about the mistakes though. Somehow I feared this would happen... Work overload that could let away mistakes like this. It seems that Bernie fired some guys and is taking very close inspection to the guitars right now (mine had to be rebuilt), but it seems that some mistakes made his way through the finished guitars, which scares me a little bit

BTW, great photography skills as well!

is there a possibility that bernie did not personally build this? reckoned this is far out from bernie's high standard of build.

that is unless a drastic change of temperature/humidity caused the top to split.

that aside, the guitar is classy as ....! my dream combo of a natural flamed maple top with black hardware and jet black ebony board without inlays.

congrats mate!

Bernie doesn't build any of the guitars coming out of BRJ. He openly admits that he uses an outside woodshop for that.......at least sometimes he admits it.

I've worked as a guitar tech in one of the most humid states in the nation (Florida), as well as one of the driest (Arizona), and have NEVER seen climate effect a guitar top like that. I've seen humidity and temperature wreak havoc, but not like this, it's way too uniform. This looks like, when book matching, they didn't sand/plane the seem properly, and it allowed for a gap. That defect between the top and body looks like someone "bumped" the top on something, chipping it, and then just glued it anyway.

Surely this thing fell in it's case, and that's what caused the top to split and the binding to lift?

It's such an epic looking guitar! I'd hate to think they let this one leave the factory like that.

How did your case look?

EDIT: Or what Max said. I guess it does look kinda chipped...

WARNING: This guitar does not float! DO NOT attempt to surf on it!

There's no way this is from shipping. The defects are quite obviously underneath the finish. Also, it's simply impossible to strike a guitar hard enough to create a "seam" in the top without actually tearing the guitar apart.

Also, where are you seeing binding?

Oh shit... damn, I guess it's too early. I realize it's the actual top I'm looking at, but from picture #5 (with the strap pin) it looks like some sort of wood binding from the side

what a bummer on an otherwise steller looking guitar.
I'd send it back. I'm sure Benie will fix this. since it's natrual (you buildr/tech guys)
can he just pulle the top off and put another one on or would he have to do a total rebuild?

Depends on what's easier for BRJ to do. Taking off a drop top is quite difficult, and could lead to more damage to the body and neck block. Given BRJ's tendency to just do rebuilds, I'd say that would be the option BRJ would be most inclined to do in this case. Quite the bummer indeed.

Mine is being rebuilt due to incorrect scale and neck radius, which seems absurd as he could just have put it for sale. It probably had much worse flaws after watching this

Mistakes happen, but this kind of issues shouldn't scape an inspection prior shipping, which makes me worrying about if there is any at all (and of course now I'm terrified about a guitar in which I spent 2k on and I've been waiting for a year just to find out things like those on it).

Wow. Never thought I would have seen something that badly done out of BRJ workshop. I have to say I'm glad I never went for that build and I was just a click away. Deffo send it back ASAP. I really hope it is just this guitar otherwise I am staying away from them because this is totaly unacceptable from any guitar maker, not just high end builders.

Otherwise beautyful guitar.

Well you did own a Huf.

Worth noting is that if the seam isn't made properly, as it appears, and there's a gap, it's not just an aesthetic issue. It can cause further problems for the life of the instrument, as the two pieces will expand and contract with the seasons independent of one another, which can cause finish cracks as well as cracks in the top from grinding against each other.
