Best 7 string for $500

I have recently looked into getting a 7 string, and was curious as to what you guys think I should look at. I am looking for a string thru, non maple fretboard, non active pickups 7 string. Those are my only conditions. I have no problem modifying or upgrading this guitar ($300 on guitar, $200 on upgrades kinda thing). The kind of sound I am looking for is John Petrucci style chunky yet tight sound. Think of his sound on "Dramatic turn of events".
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

I was guessing the crunchlab/liqifire combo is of course the best, but I don't want to be too narrow minded. I believe the RG is basswood, will that sound fine? I'm guessing mahogony is much too dark, but would something like Alder work too? I think JP uses Alder... I know he has used basswood in the past though.

Basswood (esp. Ibanez) + Dimarzios is usually good... The CL/LF set is no exception to this rule.

I would say keep an eye out for an RG7620 as well, but it is less likely you will find one in your budget.

I'm guessing the tuners are only for 7x21s, right?

I would look into Schecter And agile guitars! or maybe a used ESP LTD 7 string!

Schecters are cheap and great quality guitars for the price!
They use either Actives or passives!
Great guitars though!

Agile guitars are cheap and from what I have heard are good guitars but you can only buy them online.
Though you can see reviews and videos of people trying them out all over the place!

RG7x2x with any damn pickups you want. I'm not gonna tell you what you like.

Plus I'm typically an advocate for pickups people either don't like for one reason or another or simply haven't heard of...

Yea Agiles aren't bad. The QC can be a bit hit or miss but for the most part they churn out sturdy, playable instruments.

Washburn WG587 (picked one up for$100 last summer). Alder body with nice thin neck.

Douglas Scope or Hadron. Block the floyd and new bridge pup and your golden.

I really want the new Agile LP 7 next, though. Or another Dean Evo 7, in orange burst if I get lucky.

I like my new Ibanez ARZ307 a lot. Get one for 10-15% off on any random sale and replace just the bridge pickup.

The used option is good too, but if you've followed the classifieds here it seems that most people want $450+ for any MIJ Ibanez that isn't beat to hell. (They're probably worth it, but I'm just saying that expecting to get a 7421 for $300 is not a good idea unless you're very patient.)

I just picked one up off of CL in a trade for a Pod HD300. It even had a PAF already installed and in pretty decent shape. I have previously bought 2 other 7421's in the last maybe 3 years. The other 2 were only about $200 each. You just gotta keep an eye out, they can be had for cheap if you are patient.

I'm assuming you bought them all locally? No one on this site (or ebay) would ever sell one that cheap.

RG or RGD 7x21 + better pickups

or if you want something that's not basswood OR black and possibly necktrough - older LTD 7 models.

I personally liked my old h-207 a LOT more than my rg7321, even though they were about the same price

Thanks guys, I have more or less decided on an rg 7x21. Whats a good used price for one? I have found some cheap B-Stock ones, but since I am in Canada shipping is pretty killer. I'll post a wanted ad in the marketplace, hopefully I can find one there!

Check out conklin's Groove Tools stuff. Although conklins are anywhere from 5-10 thousand dollars they do have a really nice entry level 7. Check them out online and there are usually a couple on ebay. Also if that doesn't work i may have a carvin dc 747 right around that range that ya may be interested in hehe

I have found some good deals on there for sure, just trying to find the right one now. Whats the real difference between the 7421 and 7321? I know the new 7321's have a better bridge... other than that it seems there is no huge difference?
