Jackson Kelly MIJ 7-String

Can anyone give me any input on 7 string Kellys?

Went to a local shop yesterday. They had a 7 string Kelly:

Bolt-on neck
String-thru TOM bridge
Duncan Designed crap pups
Brushed chrome hardware
No model number anywhere, just a serial and I didn't want to snap a pic of it. Says Made in Japan
Black finish

They want 800-900 for it. Ridiculous. I need a price point reference. Anyone got any info?

It's a Jackson KE-7 from around the late 90s. They usually go for around $500. Not bad guitars at all provided you swap out the pickups.

Yes, around $350 - $500 tops is worth it for that. Even though they weren't made for very long, they're asking way too much for it. That'd be like trying to get $800-$900 for a bone stock LTD M107...

That seems really high. I'd think $300-500 tops is fair.

They go for max $300-350. $900 is highway robbery and you could easily get a used SLAT3-7 for that price.

No worries. I wasn't planning on paying that amount. This store has been around for about 10 years and they ALWAYS try to sell for the MSRP or the list price. Oh and they tend to keep the same stock for almost as long.

It's really stupid. The workers there are allowed to knock like 1/3 off the price, but can't budge further than that. So looks like it's going to sit there a while.

It's okay though, it didn't play terribly well and I can just slap some new pups in my Schecter A-7 if I want a good knock-around 7.

It's too bad because I absolutely love Kellys. Thanks for the info, guys!

QFT If you're thinking about dropping that sort of coin, then the SLAT3-7 is a far better route to go down. I had a DX7 and that wasn't the best of planks.

I picked up a Kelly 7 off here, and like everyone else has said it's not worth that much. Aside from the stock pickups everything else is pretty good though, and it's a Kelly, so it's automatically hawt.

Am I the only one that thinks SLAT3-7's kinda suck?

Only to the extent that the early one's had no binding, small sharkfins and a small logo, which made the headstock look ridiculously huge.

The current batch have had all of that fixed.

Yes.

Seriously, why would they suck? They may not be what you want, but the two I've played were both well-made, good-sounding guitars.

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on Facebook, and Soundclick might eventually be updated, too.

I love my KE-7, but I paid 235$ for it (hardcase included). The neck on mine is awesome. A little change of hardware and pickups and you can have a very nice axe for around 400$:

Sadly I actually really like the powdered chrome look of my stuff, cause if I replace something (like the bridge) it all needs to go. Probably going to pop in some Blackouts. The neck is quite nice though, frets are a tad sharp but otherwise it's sweet.

I have a DR7 (which has the same neck and hardware) and I really like the neck on mine. Well worth the $350-ish that I paid for it. It does dive though, might be the smaller body shape of mine.

Just as awesome as he is stupid.

The KE7 dove like a mother, so I moved the strap pin to sit on one of the neck bolts. Did wonders, and no drilling!

I have a DR7 too, and I also think the neck is great. I've never had any qualms with the hardware, either, which is nice. The pickups could be better, but they've honestly never bothered me enough to change them. I like playing fuzzy black metal or grind on it, and I don't need ultra note definition for those. I paid around $600 for mine, but I bought it brand new when the line was new back in around 2000. I've never had any issues with neck dive on mine, though. Do you wear your strap pretty low or something like that? I strap it up fairly high.

never had any neckdive problems with both my KE-7 but then again, I position my strap so that the guitar sits a bit lower at the bridge part and a bit higher on the neck part. that way the neck faces a bit upward when hanging.

I used to have a KE-7 and it nosedived all the time. The one thing I did love about it was the neck...it really just felt perfect in my hands.

Would anyone be able to post specs of the neck? I'd love to find a cheap 7-string guitar that has a neck that's the same width as the KE-7. Almost all other 7-strings I've owned or tried felt too wide.

I saw an RR7R for a decent price and it looked like it had the exact same neck...but I think those would suffer from terrible nosedive as well. Thoughts?
