As far as I know, yes you do, but someone with a carvin guitar might be more qualified to answer.

POOF!

If you want to install Duncans, you can do it without routing the guitar and with just slight modifications to the pickups--cutting most of the tape off the sides and snipping the mounting tabs down a little bit.

DiMarzios are wider and you'll either have to widen the pickup cavities or use a Dremel tool to shave about 1mm off each side of the base of the pickup. And even shaving the base will mean a very tight fit.

I wish Carvin would stop doing stupid shit like non-standard sized pickups. Putting EMGs in their 6-string guitars is just as difficult.

Frets on the Net

Dave's pickup rings are a work of fucking art. Really. He machines them from soild plastic, so they don't warp or crack, and they have this smooth, almost satin finish. Just look at one:

That is how I replaced an EMG with a Duncan. Believe it or not, the route wasn't wide enough by 1/4" on each side. Plus the huge gaping holes around the top and bottom of the pickup. In addition, my Dremel job isn't exactly, you know, clean.

Now you may like the direct mounted pickup look. Either way, this is something to keep in mind in case you're like me, and fuck up.

That installation looks very good. I much prefer pickup rings, personally, since they make it easier to precisely adjust the pickup height and the pickups aren't as exposed to the 'elements.'

The Duncan 7-string pickups come with a pickup ring that could be used on the Carvin to cover up a bad Dremel job.
