Electric Guitar Appreciation Thread

So last week was my birthday, but more importantly it commemorated exactly 2 years of me playing guitar. And after a long but thoroughly enjoyable playing session, I couldn't help but think about how much I love playing my RG7.

I tried several instruments before settling on guitar. I have always loved, and still do, how pianos sound, but I never liked the feel of playing them. But there is something so magical about the feel of strings, playing the electric guitar. With the ability to bend notes, it gives you absolute control over the pitch, allowing you to bend it and change it in any way you can imagine, as well as the ever-important subtleties like vibrato.

In terms of the sounds it can produce, the guitar is one of the most flexible, second only to the synthesizer. With the electric guitar, you can play everything from spanky-clean, to midly distorted, to insane crunch, and each sound has it's own dynamics.

The electric guitar presents many subtle things from palm-muting to all sorts of harmonic squeals. But best of all, the more time you spend learning it, the more rewarding playing the instrument becomes, and you can start focusing on the details of your playing (for example, getting your vibrato in tune, getting it in tempo with what you're playing...) I know this is all obvious things to all of you, but I had never really given thought about just how perfect of an instrument it is.

Best of all, however my life changes, I know that my guitar will be a constant that will always be there and allow me to express and unload any emotions I may have gathered throughout the day and serve the all-important role of a outlet. The other day, after playing, I gazed at my RG7 and I couldn't help but think how damn awesome it looked, too.

So I'd just like to say that the guitar has been a life-changing thing for me; I obsessively played it for the last 2 years (and demolished my social life in the process) but I have no regrets about that; in fact, my only regret is that I didn't start playing at an earlier age.

Anyway, here's an excerp from a clip I recorded to commemorate 2 years of playing:

I was having some latency issues so the solo is a bit ahead of the bt, and I know all you Floyd purists might stone me to death, but this was done in the spirit of fun and I hope you guys like it. Here's to many more years of playing guitar...

Good playing... way better than i was after two years! Heck, probably better than i am after 20 years! But your tone is a little buzzy on the lower notes, and your bends aren't always in tune.

Downloading it now. I love the Wall.

Guitar is the most versatile instrument today. With guitar synths, sustainers, eBow, etc, there is no other instrument that comes close, well, except bass guitar, but don't tell anyone I said that.

Congrats on two years of guitar playing

Overall nice tone and i reckon that's great playing for someone who's only been at it for a couple of years.

Nice one!

I've always been afraid to improv either of those solos because it is such a classic song.

Same here, although the improv in this rendition doesn't start till about half-way into the solo. And to most Floyd purists, this clip would be considered a treachery punishable by death, but I did it in the spirit of fun. It's a really fun solo to play, though, even if you play it far from perfect as I do. But now I can start working on the subtleties-vibrato on bends, here I come...
