Absolutely beautiful work, though that heel is killing me.

I agree with Max - absolutely gorgeous woods, absolutely monstrous heel.

Considering the top horn converges with the neck at almost the same spot as the lower horn I'd say it's not bad at all. I've played a 6 string Phoenix with the same heel and there was no access or comfort issues.
That is also the sexiest koa top I've ever seen.

Even if the access is good, I think I have a slight problem with just how visually unappealing the heel seems. As amazingly stupid that sounds. The Phoenix is such a well designed guitar with wonderful lines, and that squared off heel sticks out like a sore thumb. If the neck is set in so deep, why not carve the heel just a little bit more? At least make it asymmetrical.

Though, like I said, it's a fantastic looking guitar, and if it's even half as well built as some of the McNaught guitars I've played (VG down in Miami had a few on consignment), then it will play absolutely wonderfully, and easily stand up to some of the best work in the industry such as Suhr, Anderson, etc.

I just think a slight bit more work on the heel could have been that extra little touch.

I fully agree on that top though, I'm not a huge Koa fan, but I'd rock that top in an instant!!!

That fretboard is amazing as well!

^ Point taken. I've never played a Koa electric before but I've played a Koa Taylor Richie Sambora model..The bass response was awful and the mids were non-existent.

Koa is a tough wood to pair up, and from what I've heard from players and luthiers, it's not the most "predictable" wood, as far as sound in the end. Though, if you get a good piece and match the pickups and other woods, you'll get one hell of an amazing sounding guitar. Though, it's not as "shimmer" in the highs as maple, so it can get lost, especially in the low end.

I played a Carvin DC727 with a Koa top and Ash back and it sounded absolutely heavenly.

JemHeaven has a spectacular aura about
not all of McNaughts heel joints are the same... he pretty much designs them around the model... check out his new Tele style joint... will be nice if he starts incorporating this into his other models like the 7, if he feels it still gives the neck the structural integrity he expects his guitars to have.... I agree with the earlier post that although the heel on this koa guitar looks large visually, on the McNaught's I've played with the same heel, don't even know it's there...sounds weird, but true....

Looks like there's a slot for a piezo bridge. I'm guessing master volume/tone for magnetic pickups, two toggles (neck/mid/bridge and mag/blend/piezo) and a piezo volume?

Gorgeous woods.
