Locking Tuners, Necessary?

Hi, I have a few posts on here about doing a 7-string build in the beginner section and as I gather the parts another question has come to mind, since I cannot find locking tunerers either single or in sets of 7 and I found floyd rose 7's on eBay at a killer price (look on eBay at the "southeast music" store, awesome deals on their 7 stuff and I have 2 bridges and 2 locking nuts, they are exactly as described, new and in perfect condition.)

I was wondering, since the locking tuners are only to hold the string in place, are they even needed, or can I just put clamps of some sort on the peghead to hold the string in place? The answer seems obvious, but just in case there is some other purpose/function to them I figured I would ask

I'd suggest them. I mean, you can try the clamp thing, but honestly, the locking tuners aren't visibly different than normal tuners (except for the back of them) so they look more professional. Not to mention it increases your tuning stability like mad.

Have you looked that hard? Because 5 seconds of going to Warmoth and browsing their site netted me this: Schaller Mini Locking Tuners

I don't really understand your clamp idea. And if you have a locking nut, you don't really NEED locking tuners or a weird clamp type system. They make string changes quick and they look nice and clean without a bunch of windings on the tuning peg though.

Just to clarify, are you talking about Floyd Rose trems here?

Because locking tuners AND a locking trem may be a bit overkill, save for the things JJ mentioned. But for tuning stability, they won't have any effect because the string lock takes care of that.

However, when it comes to hard-tail or standard trem guitars, locking tuners are a no-brainer for me. Once you've tried them, you'll wonder how you could ever play without them. I don't have locking tuners on my Schecter Hellraiser and it annoys the living hell out of me. With my other guitars, that do have locking tuners, I've even played full gigs without tuning beforehand. That's how stable those buggers are.

An alternative to getting locking tuners for use with a Floyd is running the strings backwards, so they go in through the machine heads first. The ball ends hold them in place. Some people don't like how it looks, but it works about as well without having to replace the tuners, which won't affect a double locking trem system aside from cutting some time off of string changes, anyway.

Thank you all for your advice, and JJ Rodriguez thank you for pointing to Warmoth I've been looking all over but somehow I havent seen a link to them yet, maybe I just need to look more on here first

And Tom I was contemplating doing that with them but didnt know if I needed tuners or just a locking system to hold the ball in, I am looking to not have the standard tuning knobs and instead just have some small pegs to clean the look of the guitar, plus that reduces the risk of accidentally hitting the tuners off of things (I sometimes have a problem with that cause I am playing in small spaces )

And to JohnIce, yes I am talking about floyd rose trems

You can also check-out Todd Keehn's web site: TK Instruments He sells customized sets of Sperzel & Hipshot tuners. You can customize quantity, colors, buttons, knobs, etc.
