Full Sail Recording School-Getting into a Recording Career

Does anyone have experience at this school, or have any thoughts about it? I'll be moving to the Orlando area in a few years, and I'll need to choose a college as well. I'm thinking abuot taking advantage of the school. I had the idea of setting up a small recording studio and recording local bands for a living, how does this sound?

Any input is appreciated.

If you list Full Sail as where you got your degree from, you will be laughed out of the job interview.

Unfortunately, they have a history of passing anyone who pays tuition, amongst other things, so most of the people comming out of there are complete hacks. I'd look into a more respectable school, like MTSU.

Ken has disabled reputation
I have no experience in this area, but I would imagine that home recording gear has come along so far that most bands either already have gear good enough, or know someone who does.

Having said that, do you know someone in the Orlando area that you can talk to ahead of time? Maybe ask them about the scene/availability of studios/etc? Always nice to know the approximate temperature of the water before you jump in...

I actually went and checked it out...its a cool place to see.. but thats about it (I think DSS Nailed it). They do have a JEM7DBK signed by Vai hanging on one of the walls in there though lol. Just go to UCF...

There's also plenty of studios in the area.. Most of the heavy bands head out to tampa though.. we have Mana Studios(run by Erik Rutan), and the Infamous Morrisound studios out here.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

So it's similar to Berkley in a way?

Yeah, this is a few years from now so I'm not in a rush or anything. I'm sure I'll find a few people. And Ken lives close to there, so I'd prolly get in contact with him.

Very tough to make a living that way now, since everybody's got their own studio at home. As far as recording schools go, I went to one in California about a million years ago, and I didn't think I got my money's worth. Most of those outfits will teach you the basics of recording (which isn't all that complicated--you could figure it out yourself in a few months of diddling around with recording gear), but to be a professional caliber engineer/producer, you really need to have a decent understanding of the science of acoustics, which goes toward understanding the practical knowledge about how to set up a proper recording studio, understanding why gear does what it does, how and why to apply one recording technique over another to get a certain result, etc. etc. There's a lot to it, and a full course of study is desireable. Traditionally, many engineers and producers learned that stuff 'on the job', but there are many fewer jobs and "learning opportunities" in the recording business than there used to be. A lot of the best work in that field is in soundwork for TV and movies. Pays a LOT better than music.

Going into a school for recording doesn't just cover bands and such. There are also DVDs, voice overs for animated movies/televison shows, the music in movies. So just because bands are recording themselves, doesn't mean you can't make a career in recording.

However, opening your own studio, for mainly local bands, will be hard to make a living off of. Depending on how big you plan to get.

POOF!
