Oh Snap!! More New Friend For A Foe "Repeat" (SD2.0 Metal Foundry, PODX3L, Recabinet)

Yo homies!

So I just got the download finished last night for SD2.0's Metal Foundry Upgrade (I can't for the full thing to come in the mail!!) and I have to say I was very surprised at the ease of mixing. I have a brand new drum mix that now clears up the mix even more ... believe it or not I just used the plugins that came with SD2.0 for the first time and tweaked the Slipknotish preset because it sat so well with my guitars and applied different EQs and compression to make it mine. I used XDrums for the snare and toms because the ones that came with download I wasn't too keen on. I can only imagine what i'll be able to do once i get the full version.

Also I have a slightly updated tone using Recabinet ... the tone is the same as the one available for download on here, but I used a different cabinet/mic combo.

The song is called "Repeat" and you can find it at Friend For A Foe on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads or SoundClick artist: Friend For A Foe - This is a solo progressive metal project created by 24 year old Chris Purvis who writes, records, an

Hope you like it!

Thanks,
Chris

that kick is pretty sweet! i like the snare in your previous mix more though. this one is a bit weaker sounding, imo. guitar sounds better too, you seem to have got rid of some of that buzzy top end so it sounds more real now.

can't wait to hear more of this metal foundry! and i can't wait to get my hands on it!

edit; after listening to the whole thing, awesome song writing! but if i had to say one thing about the mix, i'd say that the guitars could use some thickening up, like some more low mids or something, as they're pretty bright. that may just be your thing though, personally i like my guitars a bit darker with more low mids in them so they thump real goood when i palm mute

That sounds pretty good! Metal Foundary is sounding pretty nice so far. Recabinet is sounding nice, too. I like most of what I've heard with Recabinet (I was even paying attention when it was being put together before anything was released), but it's just hard for me to justify paying that much for impulses when they're free from everybody else. Anyway, the mix sounds good. The guitars are a little bright and honky sounding, but like Max said, it sounds like it might be more of a matter of taste than anything you're doing "wrong" per se.

Thanks so much guys ... I always get paranoid when I post a new song, but I forget some of you are actually "fans" and just want to hear new music haha

The guitars are constantly being tweaked as I try new things. I've noticed the brightness before, but it will eventually disappear as I keep making adjustments (I guarantee!). I think it's because I used my old EQ preset I made in Voxengo from my old Chunk Chunk/Big Bottom Combo tone rather than the new Cali Diamondplate tone by accident lol (just realized this after looking at my Nuendo project file). Vocals are on the way for this song too so get ready for an updated mix in the near future!

This was essentially just my first little mix test of Metal Foundry. Basically when you purchase it from the Toontrack website, you get about a 1.7gig download with some of the samples and presets to essentially tide you over until the rest of the 35gigs of sample DVDs come in the mail which was nice of Toontrack haha. There's LOADS more drum samples on the way so this was just the first round! The samples from the download are SOOOO much better imho. They're raw unprocessed sounds like the first DKFHS and not preprocessed like the Avatar kits.

The drums in this mix sound more natural I think, but I agree the snare needs some working to beef it up like my old one (it's actually the 14" GHS Maple from the Avatar kit).

And yes, there are free guitar cab IRs available, but Recabinet's are just so ... perfect. I probably won't stop whoring their good name anytime soon lol. Until I get an Axe FX that is ... I'm using the Ghandi 4x12 EL34 57 Cap 1 impulse loaded into Voxengo Boogex btw.

Glad you guys like it!

i've been a fan since back in the day when you were trying to get amplitube (or was it guitarrig?) to sound good, and using a les paul tuned down low to get your toans.

imo, its more about having awesome songs and songwriting than having perfect mixes, i'd rather listen to something i think is cool but with subpar mixes than listen to boring repetitive music with an awesome professional mix.

ah, now using the recto model, it was the 5150 model the other day, haha.

ah so its a different snare. that explains why it doesn't sound as good as usual. the nir z snare is the only one i like in superior 2.0, and its the only one (imo) that sounds nice and poppy and tight even without any eq on it.

ahahaha ... yeah those were shitty days back in 05-06 ... managed to get a workable tone out of amplitube though lol. That's awesome you remember way back when. I think my music has come a looooooooong way since then lol

Ah it IS the 2002 Criminal preamp which is the 5150 emulated lol ... you are correct sir! thanks for reminding me haha

I'm just waiting for the other snares from Metal Foundry to arrive in the mail ... it's driving me nuts! GRRRRR

I dig it!

As a drummer, I like the kick and snare tones you've got going... it's opposite what you usually hear, with tight kicks full of attack, and a fat, fat snare, but it seriously works.

The cymbals though... very fizzy, not much definition or body. Dunno if it's the samples or the EQ... I know I EQ'ed all the body out my samples once, they sounds horrible!! Actually, as I listen more, it sounds like everything is a china... maybe that's actually correct?

Awesome playing, very cool tune - loving it!

Hey thanks again guys! I'm really happy with the contrast between the kick and snare, but I guarantee I'll change snares once I get the full version! The cymbals could use a bit more warmth to them as opposed to them being crispy-sounding ... and yes Metal Foundry had some sweet sounding chinas in it, but considering I had this song already mapped with my old drums, applying Metal Foundry ended up having different types of cymbals/chinas in different places than I normally put them on my map, so where some hits are chinas, they should have been cymbals lol (and that was a fuckin huge run-on sentence haha). I will definitely be fixing all these minor quarrels once I get the full version (I keep saying that ).

Sora, dude, you fuckin rock my socks

Yeah, man! Killer tune. I really dig the way you intro the song with the ambient stuff, and then the way the guitar fades in is really cool. I also like the way you get back to the ambient stuff @ 2:15. Not to mention the the sick riffage and the panning stuff throughout.

Thanks man! Glad you like it! I'm a fan of panning and fading in case you haven't noticed ... it adds a certain degree of dynamics to what would be a pretty steady "feeling" song throughout. Thanks for the e-props!
