The idea was brought up in the Suggestions forum, and it was a good one, so here we are!

Song Of The Month is pretty straightforward - every month there'l be a new "SOTM (date here) - Nominations" thread stickied at the top of this here forum. In this thread you can nominate a candidate for SOTM and second three nominations suggested by others - basically the same deal as the GOTM nominations. Because it'll be a month-long process you'll probably wanna save those nominations until you're absolutely sure, but what do I know.


There are only three rules:

• *Nominations must have been posted here at some point, so no pulling random stuff off Myspace/Soundclick/etc from that one guy who posted once back in 2005 - if it isn't posted here by the composer then it isn't eligible
  
• *Nominations need to have been posted in the month of the nomination period, so only songs posted in June 2009 will be eligible for this month's nomination. Makes sense?
  
• *No band/artist can win SOTM two months in a row (a rule henceforth known as the "GODDAMMIT BULB" rule)

When you nominate somone, you need to include the thread in which this member posted their song/clip, for the ease of the mods and also so we can verify it was posted during the month in question - not a huge deal, but it makes things easier during the tally.

I don't know if there'll be a vote at the end or if I'll just pick the winner based on who gets the most nominations, we can work that out as we go.

The winner of SOTM will get their song posted on the front page of the site as well as a mini-interview about their band/project and that song in particular. There might be other prizes too, but no promises.

Anyway, the nomination thread for this month is up, so get a-nominatin'!

I like the idea, it might help show off some of the talent on the site. So many guys here write amazing music so it's a way to try and showcase some of the lesser known guys.

Do they have to be finished songs? like if they havnt had vocals recorded yet or something along those lines or can it be anything that someone posts up and someone else wants to nominate?

I can see some potential on the idea, as long as people don't see this as a contest but something funny to check ss.org preferences on songs posted here...

I'd rather see a free download ss.org compilation (with complete layout) with the best songs posted here. This would definately promote ss.org and musicians much better than a contest...

I bet there's a fairly large quantity of untapped talent on this forum. Competitions like these are great for bringing it out.

i have to agree with Russel aka CynicEidolon, i think this idea will start well and in short time will get perverted and destroyed.
this idea works good with guitar of the month because not every one can do so though recording its another story.
as this idea will get more and more popular it will attract more attention and traffic to this page. on one hand its good thing on the other hand it might turn in to too much work for mods to deal with fame and boobs competitions.

"Too much work"? None of us get paid so if it becomes too much work it ends (though I will accept the aforementioned boobs as payment for my services). This whole thing will be heavily moderated, so if people turn this into a dump pissing contest I'll pull the plug. There's an opportunity here and I trust that people can take it without becoming petty or getting caught up in needless drama.

I think this is a great idea and will benefit the site a lot.

Deciding who wins needs to be made more clear. Maybe at the end of the month post a poll with the 5 most nominated songs, and let everyone vote.

I was going to do that as that's how GOTM works, but I don't want things to end up like GOTM and be weeks behind if I go AWOL or forget or something. This first month will be a test run and we can work on it from there.

So, the inaugral SOTM went smoothly and with far less hassle than some were predicting, which was a welcome surprise. Thanks for not fruiting it up, lads! The winner, of course, was Keith Merrow (DIABOLIC5150) with his song "Andromeda". Congratulations Keith! Expect an official announcement shortly.

Anyway, how do people think the whole process went? Should anything be added/changed/etc? I think it works well enough as it is but I'm open to suggestions. Fire away!

I liked it, but is there any chance that we get the nominations edited into the first post with a link to their thread and the number of seconding(s) they have? That just seems like it would help the process a bit.

Also, I think that if a song is posted in the last 4 or so days of a month (Or however many you think is fair. By that time, many people will have already used their nominations and good stuff might get left out.), I think that it should probably get an extension into the next month (Unless it manages to win, of course.). This just lets new artists and songs get time to get exposure. I can't imagine that anybody would get upset if a song that was released at the very end of the previous month won the month after that, but it keeps people from being afraid to nominate somebody because they assumed that you guys were sticklers about tiny technicalities.

Well the date rule isn't hard and fast, I'd be willing to give a bit of leeway, it's mainly there so some n00b doesn't try to nominate something posted aeons ago. As for the voting process, I'll edit everything into the OP for future reference Might start doing that for GOTM too.

I'm late to this party but I think this is a great idea. I mean really how many times has someone here come up with something awesome just because they bought a new pickup? Hopefully it'll make it easier to find that cool song you heard from someone's NGD.

*OTM's have always been cordial and friendly here before, I don't see why his I'll be any different.

Truth is, it's not up because I've been debating whether or not to keep doing it. It gets a poor turnout relative to GOTM - hell, last month's thread got like three nominations total and not a single vote for any of them - and it makes me think that people don't care that much

I'm gonna take one more tilt at it once Alex is done upgrading. We'll see how it goes.
