BK pickup clip (S2.0/Podx3/Painkiller)

It, uh... sounds horrible?

Sorry, but imo the high end is really harsh and I can't hear anything except pick scrapes (you've possibly discovered the meaning of 'too much djent'). I'm sure the pickups are awesome, but this recording sure ain't... Up the mids and down the highs and make those things growl!

It sounds good, excellent playing. Tasteful riffage and leads, love it.

Travis have you tried recording with impulses before? All you'd need is to connect your head to the recorder, load up the impulse file of your choice, mute the dry signal, and BOOM - serious professional mic'd up tone but direct. No cab necessary (if you have a dummy load, such as a Hot Plate). It would sound a lot better than the POD, which of course is very limiting.

Otherwise, kickass bro

Kronpox: Yeah, I wasn't too sure about this mix at allllll. These pickups sound way different than my EMG's, so I still don't have a good patch for them. This was just a patch I made really quick, which obviously didn't sound too good haha.

zimbloth: Nope I haven't tried impulses, but I've been interested in trying them! Unfortunately all of my gear is in back in Hamilton, so all that I have is the POD. I'm going to try to get a JSX for here at home, so I'll definitely look into impulses. Any good sound clips for an example on how it sounds?

There actually is bass haha. It's just a pitch shifted guitar.....so it sucks. I can't ever get it to really stand out in the mix.

Try boosting the guitars around 200hz, with a High Pass Filter around 80-120hz. If you want more midrange snarl boost 1.5khz a bit. Bass-wise, try boosting around 100-120hz as well as ~400-600 (whatever corresponds to the punchiness of the bass, depends).

I liked the track a lot! I'd listen to it anytime. What were the drum tracks done with? Nice job dude.

Agree about the highs- it's pretty harsh. I'd up the low mids only, as the high mids don't seem to really be as necessary in this case.

Zimbloth, I'm curious why you'd run the HPF- what's your reasoning on that? Sounds to me like he could run a LPF set high to cut out some of the harshness.

Yeah Chris, I recommend running a LPF too, usually around 12khz does the job at eliminating fizz. In extreme cases sometimes even setting it around 8-10khz is necessary. It depends on how the drums and things fill out the mix.

I usually set the HPF around 120khz and leave that area for bass and kicks. The fullness of guitar is really around 200-300hz anyways, the stuff below will get buried in the mix. It sounds tighter when you scoop out the guitar's fundamentals.

Hhhmm, interesting. I'll do some recordings and try that approach out. I'll mess around with it. I'm not sure if I agree with the idea of attenuating the low frequencies/fundamentals, but I suppose I won't know until I try! Now I'm curious though.

If it's not clear, I don't do a lot of heavy guitar recording! I mostly deal with instruments in the recording studio that don't plug in!

EDIT: I'm just not thinking well tonight.

Just about every pro engineer cuts the lows on guitars around 80-120hz. It's not eliminating the guitar's punch or fullness, just the subbass you don't need or want in the mix. Bass and kicks should be filling that in.

the low cut thing is good, unless you´re doing som major low tuning. meshuggah, for example, still have som nice low end in their guitar,s and the bass only adds the lowest frequencies. they also have the "fundamental" kick frequncy at like 45 Hz, which is pretty damn deep :P
