Old Peavey amp -> cpu for recording?

I have an old Peavey Classic Chorus 212 amp that I'd like to plug into my computer to do some crappy recording.

Peavey.com :: Search Results

It has a "preamp out mix" and "preamp out dry" that are the only two things I think may be able to be used to go into a mic input on my computer. I may be totally off though and I may not be able to plug it straight into the puter Thanks for any thoughts!

Glancing at the PDF, that looks like it should work. Just plug one of those outputs into your audio interface of choice, load up an impulse, and rock that sumbitch.

Well I also thought of just plugging the guitar straight in to the cpu and using some kinda cpu based effects. Is that what an impulse is? I've heard a lot about guys using POD's to record through, but I'd like to see if there's a little cheaper something for just goofing around.

That could also work if you don't want to use your amp. An impulse is just for the power amp and cab. It's basically a convolution reverb put to creative use, and it sounds better than any cab modeling out there right now. There are some free preamp modelers, but they escape me at the moment, and I'm getting ready to go out soon. I might try to look them up later if nobody else chimes in.

Sounds interesting. I got Reaper, seems ok. May try another freebie program. I did have a cheap version of Cakewalk somewhere....of course I can't find the disk now :-/ My amp and disto pedal don't have really good tone, so I guess I could find some amp model, or impulse that would sound better. Thanks!

I use reaper and impulses too and they work out really well. Search here for some other convolution reverbs on there that will work too. Also search on the web for free impulses, there are a shit ton of free ones there. Also if you get a right adapter you can just go from your preamp out and into your mic/line-in on your comp (this is how I record).

my girlfriend says i'm totally METAL!

Ok, I'm a n00b

I got some Guitar Suite cabinet effects for the Reaper program. I plug my guitar straight into the puter, and try to add distortion with the fx vst : JCM 900, and/or add a DS-1 disto pedal....but it all ends up rather lame sounding no matter how I tweak it. So I wonder are my tweaking skills lame or are these just not very good "simulated" tones to chose from?

I found a thread with some 96khz impulses, but not sure if this stuff will work with the Reaper. Want 96kHz Guitar Cab Impulses??? - Cockos Confederated Forums

I'm not sure exactly which VSTs you're using, and I'm probably not familiar with them anyway, but are you using any kind of cab emulation? If not, that's probably why. If so, maybe they're just crappy VSTs. I don't know.

Those probably aren't the best cab impulses, even if they are 96khz. An impulse taken from a real cab is going to sound a hell of a lot better than the POD cab modeling. Most people use impulses with PODs instead of using the POD's speaker sims because there's a pretty big difference.

I think the VST I was thinking about in my other post was Wagner. I've heard a lot of pretty good sounding tracks made using Wagner and cab impulses.
