I can't find the cure for muddy guitars! HELP ME!
Im trying so hard to get a tone that doesn't sound like a pile of shit in the form of music. I am currently using an X3 live (Bulbs patch at the moment) and a Schecter blackjack 007 (Mahogany body and maple neck) with an M7 in the bridge. I love the tone I get when playing, but when recorded it sucks so damn hard... None of the notes have an attack of its own. They all sound like really bad legato... I've tried EQing and I've noticed that it helps, but I don't know what exact frequencies to cut or boost!
I'm trying to record 4 tracks. 2 are 100% panned and 2 are 30% panned at the moment. How should I EQ or pan to ge the best results in clarity? I'm in a BIG need of help and any of such is rewarded with a nice little rep. ![]()

If you are recording that amount of tracks, you need to turn the gain down, thats the best thing to do.
If you are recording maybe one or two tracks, thats alright, but 4 total guitar tracks will not work with the same gain you use usually. |

exactly ^
it would be good too if you could let us hear some examples to analyze the problem properly. You always need more mids than you think in a recording situation too. 500k and 2k are good places to boost a DB or so, but dont over do it or you'll just get honk/squelch |

You could also try to boost the treble (or mid) on your signal going into the distortion. This will emphasize the pick-attack, and allow you to lower the gain a bit while still having that 'hi-gain' fluid feel and sound, which in turn tightens up the low end and adds some punch.

Nah guys, I was just kidding... It still sounds like shit. argh... I have no clue of what to do... There must be something that I'm missing since there are so many guys on here who are getting great results from the same setup. Im using .068 Strings btw... Might be an issue? I love the sound and feeling I get from these elixirs though, so that should not be it. Im gonna try to record some with my Hellraiser and see if it is the guitar that is weird.

Did you try it with lower gain?

I use a (modified) version of bulb's patch for my recording. I set it to 100% left, 100% right, 50% left, 50% right in a quadtrack recording. 75% gain on the amp, 41% on the boost. Volume at about 72% (actually quite low when recording, but that allows it to go through without clipping anything, and I can simply raise the volume in my DAW to have it match up).
Some examples of what this sounds like for me (keep in mind, there is NO POST EQ or anything on these):

When quadtracking, the standard panning is usually 80/80 and 100/100. Having the guitars panned too close to the center will add a bit of mush.
Also, try how it sounds with only two tracks 100/100, since quadtracking guitars might not be the best option when it comes to clarity, because even if you are the tightest player ever, having four individual tracks will add a bit of mud. The tighter the takes are, the less you will have, but quadtracking is not a must in any way! And remember to tie 90pound metal objects to your testicles to add pain and feeling to your take... oh what!? ![]() |
