LAPTOP STUDIO HELP

Okay yall.......
I just bought a laptop a week ago and am wanting to basically have a simple rig for recording ideas, band practices, my pathetic electronica ideas and such.

The Laptop:
Compaq Presario F767NR
AMD Turion 64x2
2GB DDR
250 GB Hardrive
3 USB 2.0 ports
and unfortunatly, you guessed it, fuckin Windows Vista.

At the moment I'm only running Fruity Loops Pro 4, Cakewalk Music Creator 3 for music related stuff. Would the system bog down or run smoother if I bought a USB interface to record instrument/mic inputs to the laptop? Any suggestions? I working with a somewhat tight budget. I know Vista uses alot of CPU and other resources, but thats about all I know.

I had my brother try to take Vista off and put XP on, but it didnt recognize some of the hardware and/or drivers, so Vista went back on. Does anyone here know of an easy fix (besides slangin dope and buying a Mac)?

It takes a good bit of work to get XP on a system when its drivers aren't already recognized by XP but if you have the driver CD that came with the laptop you can load them in manually while XP is installing.

I'd try to track down a used MBox, for a budget. Heavy DAWs and high plugin counts are really going to kill your CPU and RAM more than anything else.

My system has a self-sustaining recovery system,It's built into the computer, but I am allowed to burn a set of recovery discs. So Ive done that, for when an idea doesnt work. My brother said his main problem was finding a driver for the Video card. which if I remember right is an Nvidia Gforce7000. I dont have the specs infront of me, as im on a dif. computer. How reliable is fire wire and how does it connect to the system?

I dont mind firewire but USB 2.0 works just as well. I haven't had a reliably issue with it ever nor with USB. Firewire is just another type of port on the computer btw. I dont know how many pc's come standard with them now though, Ive been using a Mac for awhile.

I second finding a Mbox but there are a ton of interfaces out there.

RIP Chuck Schuldiner, Vitek, and Shawn Lane.

im not really sure when XP failed during the install because I wasnt there. I work 2nd shift and live 25 minutes away from my parents and work in the town they live in, so i just dropped it off on my way to work to let my brother work on it. He knows more about computers than I do, as he's finishing up tech school for it. I have another friend thats an I.T. guy and he told me to run BelArc advisor and them email him the results so he could track down driver updates or patches that would allow Vista components to work with XP
